Walker Alice Title : Il colore viola
Author: Walker Alice
Publisher: Sur

Walker Alice Title : Meridian
Author: Walker Alice
Publisher: Sur

Author: Walker Alice, McCloud Shiloh (FRW)

Sometimes it all feels a bit too much to bear.?I have learned to dance.” Alice Walker is beloved for her ability to speak her own truth in ways that speak for and about countless others. Here she confronts personal and collective challenges in words that dance, sing, and heal. Readers of these remarkable poems will find comfort and camaraderie ? and get a joy-filled dancing lesson.

Walker Alice Title : The Cushion in the Road
Author: Walker Alice
Publisher: New Pr

In her newest collection of wide-ranging meditations on our intertwined personal, spiritual, and political destinies, Alice Walker writes that ?we are beyond a rigid category of color, sex, or spirituality if we are truly alive.” For the millions of her devoted fans?and for readers of Walker’s bestselling 2006 book We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For in particular?here is a new ?gift of words” (Essence) that invites readers on a journey of political awakening and spiritual insight.

The Cushion in the Road revisits themes the Pulitzer Prize?winning novelist, poet, essayist, and activist has addressed throughout her career: racism, Africa, solidarity with the Palestinian people, the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, Cuba, healthcare, and the work of Aung San Suu Kyi. In doing so, Walker explores her conflicting impulses to retreat into inner contemplation and to remain deeply engaged with the world. Through the evocative image of the meditation cushion in the road, she finds a delicate balance between these two paths and invites her readers to do so, too.

Rich with humor, wisdom, and Walker’s unique eye for the telling details of human experience and the natural world, The Cushion in the Road shows Walker at the height of her literary powers, reveals the depths of her spiritual and political understandings, and will surely be an inspiration for all.

Stout Nancy, Walker Alice (FRW) Title : One Day in December
Author: Stout Nancy, Walker Alice (FRW)
Publisher: Monthly Review Pr

Celia Sánchez is the missing actor of the Cuban Revolution. Although not as well known in the English-speaking world as Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, Sánchez played a pivotal role in launching the revolution and administering the revolutionary state. She joined the clandestine 26th of July Movement and went on to choose the landing site of the Granma and fight with the rebels in the Sierra Maestra. She collected the documents that would form the official archives of the revolution, and, after its victory, launched numerous projects that enriched the lives of many Cubans, from parks to literacy programs to helping develop the Cohiba cigar brand. All the while, she maintained a close relationship with Fidel Castro that lasted until her death in 1980.

The product of ten years of original research, this biography draws on interviews with Sánchez’s friends, family, and comrades in the rebel army, along with countless letters and documents. Biographer Nancy Stout was initially barred from the official archives, but, in a remarkable twist, was granted access by Fidel Castro himself, impressed as he was with Stout’s project and aware that Sánchez deserved a worthy biography. This is the extraordinary story of an extraordinary woman who exemplified the very best values of the Cuban Revolution: selfless dedication to the people, courage in the face of grave danger, and the desire to transform society.

Long Martha, Walker Alice (FRW) Title : Ma, He Sold Me for a Few Cigarettes
Author: Long Martha, Walker Alice (FRW)
Publisher: Seven Stories Pr

'Not for the faint of heart, Long's story is a gritty, grueling, and heartbreaking testament to one girl's unbreakable spirit.'--Publishers Weekly, starred review

When Martha Long's feckless mother hooks up with the Jackser ('that bandy aul bastard'), and starts having more babies, the abuse and poverty in the house grow more acute. Martha is regularly sent out to beg and more often steal, and her wiles (as a child of 7, 8) are often the only thing keeping food on the table. Jackser is a master of paranoid anger and outburst, keeping the children in an unheated tenement, unable to go to school, at the ready for his unpredictable rages. Then Martha is sent by Jackser to a man he knows in exchange for the price of a few cigarettes. She is nine. She is filthy, lice-ridden, outcast. Martha and Ma escape to England, but for an itinerant Irishwoman finding work in late 1950s England is a near impossibility. Martha treasures the time alone with her mother, but amazingly Ma pines for Jackser and they eventually return to Dublin and the other children. And yet there are prized cartoon magazines, the occasional hidden penny to buy the children sweets, the glimpse of loving family life in other houses, and Martha's hope that she will soon be old enough to make her own way.

Virtually uneducated, Martha Long is natural-born storyteller. Written in the vernacular of the day, the reader is tempted to speak like Martha for the rest of a day (and don't let me hear yer woman roarin' bout it neither). One can't help but cheer on this mischievous, quick-witted, and persistent little girl who has captured hearts across Europe.

Walker Alice Title : The Chicken Chronicles
Author: Walker Alice
Publisher: New Pr

Praised as ?a book-long spell?hypnotic” in the Los Angeles Times, this remarkable book by the celebrated writer Alice Walker tells the story of her flock of chickens. Over time, her blossoming relationship with ?her girls” became a source of inspiration, strength, and spiritual exploration, and helped Walker connect more profoundly with her own past as a girl in rural Georgia.

Walker has recorded this journey in The Chicken Chronicles, an extraordinary document of personal discovery, political commitment, and the joys of relating to animals. Hailed by Utne Reader as ?poignant and wonderfully eccentric,” each of Walker's thirty-seven essays addresses ?her girls” directly, sometimes from the intimate proximity of her yard, other times at a great distance, from her journeys to Bali and Dharamsala as a witness and activist for peace and justice.

With ?illuminating and wonderfully wacky ruminations” (Kirkus), The Chicken Chronicles is a new treat for Walker fans, a powerful touchstone for anyone seeking a deeper connection with the natural world, and a celebration of chickens everywhere!
