Whitehouse David Title : I fiori non dimenticano
Author: Whitehouse David
Publisher: Sperling & Kupfer

Whitehouse David Title : Mobile Library
Author: Whitehouse David
Publisher: Scribner

From the award-winning novelist David Whitehouse, hailed by The New York Times as “a writer to watch,” a tragicomic adventure about a troubled adolescent boy who escapes his small town in a stolen library-on-wheels.

“An archivist of his mother,” Bobby Nusku spends his nights meticulously cataloging her hair, clothing, and other traces of the life she left behind. By day, Bobby and his best friend Sunny hatch a plan to transform Sunny, limb-by-limb, into a cyborg who could keep Bobby safe from schoolyard torment and from Bobby’s abusive father and his bleach-blonde girlfriend. When Sunny is injured in a freak accident, Bobby is forced to face the world alone.

Out in the neighborhood, Bobby encounters Rosa, a peculiar girl whose disability invites the scorn of bullies. When Bobby takes Rosa home, he meets her mother, Val, a lonely divorcee, whose job is cleaning a mobile library. Bobby and Val come to fill the emotional void in each other’s lives, but their bond also draws unwanted attention. After Val loses her job and Bobby is beaten by his father, they abscond in the sixteen-wheel bookmobile. On the road they are joined by Joe, a mysterious but kindhearted ex-soldier. This “puzzle of people” will travel across England, a picaresque adventure that comes to rival those in the classic books that fill their library-on-wheels.

At once tender, provocative and darkly funny, Mobile Library is a fable about the intrinsic human desire to be loved and understood—and about one boy’s realization that the kinds of adventures found in books can happen in real life. It is the ingenious second novel by a writer whose prose has been hailed as “outlandishly clever” (The New York Times) and “deceptively effortless” (The Boston Globe).

Rapley Ralph (EDT), Whitehouse David (EDT) Title : Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
Author: Rapley Ralph (EDT), Whitehouse David (EDT)
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry

One of the exciting aspects of being involved in the field of molecular biology is the ever-accelerating rate of progress, both in the development of new methodologies and the practical applications of these methodologies. This popular textbook has been completely revised and updated to provide a comprehensive overview and to reflect key developments in this rapidly expanding area.

Chapters on the impact of molecular biology in the development of biotechnology have been fully updated and include the applications of molecular biology in the areas of diagnostics, biosensors and biomarkers, therapeutics, agricultural biotechnology and vaccines. The first six chapters deal with the technology used in current molecular biology and biotechnology. These primarily deal with core nucleic acid techniques, genomics, proteomics and recombinant protein production. Further chapters address major advances in the applications of molecular biotechnology. By presenting information in an easily assimilated form, this book makes an ideal undergraduate text. Molecular Biology and Biotechnology 6th Edition will be of particular interest to students of biology and chemistry, as well as to postgraduates and other scientific workers who need a sound introduction to this ever rapidly advancing and expanding area.

Whitehouse David Title : Glass
Author: Whitehouse David
Publisher: Smithsonian Inst Pr

Illustrated with 120 superb pieces, Glass: A Short History brings to life a centuries-old craft that has served many purposes, styles, and cultures. Until the first century BC, glass was made only in Western Asia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean regions; its manufacture then spread to China and other areas. The peoples of the Roman Empire included the most versatile glassmakers in the ancient world, leading to both widely available low-cost  glassware and stunning  luxury glass. During  the Middle Ages, Islamic glassworkers  decorated  their fine cut glass with gilding and brilliant enamel. In the 15th century, the focus of luxury glassmaking shifted to Venice. Glassmaking  in Europe  was transformed again in the 17th  century, when thick-walled  objects with cut and engraved ornament were in great demand.

By the nineteenth century,  glassmaking was well established in America, where, as in Europe, industrial processes were developed to supply the rapidly expanding population with glassware for daily use. Within the past 50 years glass has gained acceptance as a medium for artistic expression, and the Studio Glass Movement, born in the United  States, has inspired artists all over the world to explore its unique properties. Glass tells this sweeping story from ancient times to the present in an accessible text with gorgeous examples.

Author: Whitehouse David
Publisher: Hudson Hills Pr

Whitehouse, director of the Corning Museum, has begun the task of cataloging its impressive collection of Islamic glass with this catalog, the first of a projected three. Beautifully presented in an oversized volume (9.25x12'), the catalog covers early Islamic works from the 8th-11th centuries, presenting a color plate and descriptive entry for each of the 595 vessels or fragments. The entries include dimensions, date, description and, in most cases, additional comments concerning provenance, comparable works, method of production, and a bibliography. Among the appendices is an essay controversy over the origins of the Corning Hedwig beaker, and notes on other rock crystal works. Whitehouse David Title : Sasanian And Post-sasanian Glass in the Corning Museum of Glass
Author: Whitehouse David
Publisher: Hudson Hills Pr

This catalog contains 72 objects in the collection of The Corning Museum of Glass that are believed to be Sasanian or 'post-Sasanian' (i.e., made in Sasanian style in the centuries immediately following the fall of the Sasanid dynasty). The uncertainty about their origin derives from the fact that relatively few Sasanian glass vessels have been excavated from controlled archaeological contexts. No Sasanian glass collection of comparable size and variety has yet been published, and thus the objects at Corning provide a starting point for anyone who wishes to study file glass made in the Sasanian Empire.
Each catalog entry consists of a detailed description, usually accompanied by a comment on the significance of the object and notes on similar pieces in other collections. Every object is illustrated by a color photograph and a line drawing that shows the profile. Two appendixes provide information on fragments collected from three archeological sites in central Iraq and chemical analyses of Sasanian glass, including objects in the collection at Corning. The volume also includes concordances, an index, and an extensive bibliography.
