Illustrated with 120 superb pieces, Glass: A Short History brings to life a centuries-old craft that has served many purposes, styles, and cultures. Until the first century BC, glass was made only in Western Asia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean regions; its manufacture then spread to China and other areas. The peoples of the Roman Empire included the most versatile glassmakers in the ancient world, leading to both widely available low-cost  glassware and stunning  luxury glass. During  the Middle Ages, Islamic glassworkers  decorated  their fine cut glass with gilding and brilliant enamel. In the 15th century, the focus of luxury glassmaking shifted to Venice. Glassmaking  in Europe  was transformed again in the 17th  century, when thick-walled  objects with cut and engraved ornament were in great demand.

By the nineteenth century,  glassmaking was well established in America, where, as in Europe, industrial processes were developed to supply the rapidly expanding population with glassware for daily use. Within the past 50 years glass has gained acceptance as a medium for artistic expression, and the Studio Glass Movement, born in the United  States, has inspired artists all over the world to explore its unique properties. Whitehouse, director of the Corning Museum, has begun the task of cataloging its impressive collection of Islamic glass with this catalog, the first of a projected three. Beautifully presented in an oversized volume (9.25x12'), the catalog covers early Islamic works from the 8th-11th centuries, presenting a color plate and descriptive entry for each of the 595 vessels or fragments. The entries include dimensions, date, description and, in most cases, additional comments concerning provenance, comparable works, method of production, and a bibliography. Among the appendices is an essay controversy over the origins of the Corning Hedwig beaker, and notes on other rock crystal works. Whitehouse also includes an essay on relief-cut glass with zoomorphic decoration. The volume will be essential for students and scholars of the history of Islamic art. This catalog contains 72 objects in the collection of The Corning Museum of Glass that are believed to be Sasanian or 'post-Sasanian' (i.e., made in Sasanian style in the centuries immediately following the fall of the Sasanid dynasty). The uncertainty about their origin derives from the fact that relatively few Sasanian glass vessels have been excavated from controlled archaeological contexts. No Sasanian glass collection of comparable size and variety has yet been published, and thus the objects at Corning provide a starting point for anyone who wishes to study file glass made in the Sasanian Empire.
Each catalog entry consists of a detailed description, usually accompanied by a comment on the significance of the object and notes on similar pieces in other collections. Every object is illustrated by a color photograph and a line drawing that shows the profile. Two appendixes provide information on fragments collected from three archeological sites in central Iraq and chemical analyses of Sasanian glass, including objects in the collection at Corning. The volume also includes concordances, an index, and an extensive bibliography.
