Non molto tempo fa, nei contesti scolastici la parola «feedback» veniva usata di rado. Si preferiva invece il termine «voto» per indicare il modo più convenzionale di dare agli studenti e alle studentesse un rimando sul loro lavoro e sul loro apprendimento. Un rimando però puramente quantitativo, orientato alla persona anziché al compito, e unidirezionale: dall'insegnante allo studente. La cultura del feedback, indagata a fondo da Hattie e Clarke nel più ampio quadro della valutazione formativa, ci pone invece davanti a una questione ben diversa. Il feedback è uno degli strumenti più potenti ed efficaci che abbiamo per dire ai nostri alunni e alle nostre alunne come stanno apprendendo e per aiutarli a migliorare. Allo stesso tempo, il feedback produce però una grande variabilità di effetti, a seconda di come viene comunicato (qualità, tempismo, frequenza), del contesto (dato nel gruppo o individualmente) e delle caratteristiche dei nostri studenti (sul piano dell'autostima e dell'autoefficacia). Strutturato in cinque capitoli, il libro mette in luce e approfondisce gli elementi che concorrono a creare una pratica del feedback efficace: l'importanza di dare feedback che favoriscano il passaggio da un apprendimento «di superficie» a uno profondo; i diversi processi di feedback possibili: tra pari, dagli insegnanti agli studenti e dagli studenti agli insegnanti; le caratteristiche e l'efficacia del feedback dato durante le attività, ma anche le potenzialità del feedback al termine della lezione.
