Warner (geology and geography, West Virginia U., US), Nellis (geography, Kansas State U., US), and Foody (geographical information science, U. Nottingham, UK) present a survey of the field of remote sensing. They have sought to provide as broad a view of the field as possible to an audience already familiar with the basics, limiting the scope to the terrestrial earth for reasons of space, but covering new applications in the social sciences, biogeochemical modeling, and disaster modeling in addition to traditional sensing applications such as in soils, geology, and vegetation. Following an introduction to broad overarching issues, including remote sensing policy, four chapters discuss the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with the terrestrial environment in order to provide necessary background for the discussion of applications. Eight chapters than describe technologies of digital sensors and issues of image characteristics. Processes of remote sensing analysis, such as pre-processing of optical imagery, surface reference data collection, integrating remote sensing and geographic information systems, image classification, and accuracy assessment, are then examined. Twelve chapters then describe applications in the lithospheric sciences, plant sciences, hydrospheric and cryospheric sciences, and the study of global change and human environments.
