Fra tutte le testimonianze sui fuorilegge del West, non ne esiste una più interessante e drammatica di quella resa dallo sceriffo Pat Garrett a proposito del suo ex amico d'infanzia, il leggendario bandito William H. Bonney, più noto con l'indimenticabile nome di Billy The Kid. Il libro di Garrett, non una persona qualunque ma addirittura l'uomo che finì per catturare e uccidere Billy The Kid, contribuì in maniera determinante a trasportare le vicende del giovane nemico pubblico dal terreno della storia a quello del mito. Ciò accadde perché, malgrado lo sceriffo intendesse, con il suo libro, riportare la vita del Kid sul terreno della cronaca e discolparsi rispetto a chi lo accusava di essere riuscito a uccidere il bandito solo sparando a tradimento, il semplice racconto delle imprese criminali del suo antagonista finisce per essere come benzina gettata sul fuoco di una leggenda che fa di Billy The Kid un novello Robin Hood. I motivi che indussero Garrett a pubblicare questa vita di Billy the Kid, indicandola fin dal titolo come autentica', sono da ricercarsi in parte nel desiderio di sfatare l'aura di sensazionalismo che subito circondò la figura del fuorilegge, ma anche le accuse moralistiche dei predicatori religiosi, riconoscendo gli aspetti positivi della personalità del Kid. In parte anche maggiore, tuttavia, il motivo di Garrett va ricercato nella volontà di difendersi dalle accuse che gli furono rivolte di averlo ucciso a tradimento.
