Nel panorama sempre più complesso dell'acquisizione delle lingue e delle culture seconde, il volume si inserisce portando una riflessione sul significato dello studio all'estero nei programmi full immersion, che prevedono un contatto profondo e articolato con la realtà ospitante. Muovendo da uno studio sulla pedagogia anglosassone del Service-Learning- basata sul rapporto di reciprocità tra studente (che presta la propria opera presso enti, istituzioni, associazioni) e comunità ospitante (che gli offre occasioni per imparare la lingua calate nella vita concreta) -, è nata l'esigenza di elaborare un approccio che fosse più consono alla realtà italiana: FICCS (Full Immersion: Culture, Content, Service), che vuole rendere viva e profonda questa esperienza di studio in Italia per favorire, con una educazione di tipo riflessivo, l'apprendimento non solo linguistico ma interculturale.
