(EDT), Anfam David (CON), Cooper Harry (CON), Fine Ruth (CON), Herman Todd (CON) Publisher: Skira The first publication dedicated exclusively to Mark Rothko’s art during the critical formative period of the 1940s. Examining the development and artistic exploration of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, this unprecedented volume presents the works of American artist Mark Rothko from the 1940s, a time when his most essential development as a painter occurred, dramatically and in a very compact space of time.During this period, Rothko moved from expressive figurative and surrealist canvases to more abstract multiform subjects and finally to his signature abstractions—luminous rectangles of color suspended in space. Richly illustrated with works by Rothko and his contemporaries, and with essays by prominent Rothko scholars, this important new book deepens our understanding of Rothko’s art during this vital period, and that of the mature works that emerged from it. € 46,20

![]() ![]() Author: Syrett David, Bradford James (FRW) Publisher: Naval Inst Pr Admiral Lord Howe, although a seminal figure in British naval history, is one of the least studied admirals of the Age of Fighting Sail. There has never been any scholarly biography of Admiral Lord Howe. This neglect is difficult to understand for Admiral Lord Howe is one of the greatest leaders in the entire history of the Royal Navy whose career spans Britain's 18th century naval wars, from the War of Austrian Succession to the Great Mutiny at Spithead in the French Revolutionary War. Howe not only actively participated in many of the great and formative events of the Georgian Age, but was also a key figure in George III's navy. In the Seven Years War, Howe conducted Pitt's raids on the coast of France and led the British attack at Quiberon Bay. He initially sought a political solution to the American Revolution through negotiations with Benjamin Franklin. When war did erupt, Howe commanded the British squadron in America and subsequently conducted the Third Relief of Gibraltar. He served as First Lord of the Admiralty in the government of the Younger Pitt and in the French Revolutionary War, Howe commanded the Channel Fleet, defeated the French on the Glorious First of June, and negotiated the end of the Great Mutiny at Spithead. In this biography David Syrett, utilizing primary documents in manuscript sources, explores, lucidly analyzes and effectively appraises the career of one of the greatest admirals in British history. € 27,10
