«Il cervello è un cavallo impetuoso controllato dalle redini dell'inibizione», scriveva Berthoz in "La scienza della decisione": una suggestiva immagine che anticipava il tema approfondito in questo suo ultimo libro. Il continuo gioco tra eccitazione e inibizione, tra freno e acceleratore, è il frutto di una raffinata modulazione dei circuiti neurali che, svolgendo con precisione il proprio lavoro, arginano il caos incontrollato e danno origine ai meccanismi di scelta e decisione, all'immaginazione e alla creatività. Gli organismi viventi interagiscono continuamente con l'esterno, elaborando informazioni per trasformarle in decisioni e comportamenti come attaccare una preda, afferrare un oggetto in movimento, camminare, ma anche comporre un'opera musicale, creare uno slogan pubblicitario o scrivere una storia. Temi egualmente complessi, a fronte dei quali il nostro cervello non può adottare né soluzioni troppo semplici perché non risolverebbero i problemi, né troppo sofisticate perché rallenterebbero e renderebbero troppo costosi i processi neuronali. La soluzione passa invece attraverso chiare deviazioni dalla strada maestra della logica, in grado di organizzare con originalità, eleganza e creatività la complessità del mondo e dei processi naturali che lo regolano.

Anche se non ci facciamo mai caso, il nostro cervello risolve problemi e prende decisioni di continuo. Per farlo, percepisce e agisce in molti modi a seconda del contesto, compensa mancanze, affronta situazioni nuove e cambia punto di vista.
