L'infedele è la storia di Fatima-Sophie, una giovane donna che vive a Bruxelles ma proviene da un imprecisato villaggio arabo situato ai bordi del deserto, dove la vita è segnata da numerosi episodi di sopraffazione maschilista e di fanatismo religioso. A Bruxelles inizia la vita 'europea' della protagonista, che incontra Adrian, un giovane scandinavo, con alle spalle un passato assai misterioso. Alla fine l'incontro tra Sophie e Adrian finirà con l'essere una sorta di resa dei conti non solo di carattere personale, ma anche delle rispettive culture.

Nabil fa il violoncellista a Baghdad, in uno scenario decisamente poco favorevole alla musica sinfonica: incompreso dai più, preso di mira dai salafiti, sente di essere un corpo estraneo al proprio paese. Decide perciò di fuggire, di andarsene in Europa. A Bruxelles, nel cuore dell'Europa, Nabil incontra Fanny, una ragazza bella e disinibita che pare quasi avere il compito di introdurlo nella modernità e affrancarlo dalle angosce che gli hanno impedito di fare il musicista. Ma il passato di Nabil non è rimasto a Baghdad: anche a Bruxelles noti fantasmi vigilano sulla moralità delle fanciulle, controllano il rispetto del digiuno nel mese di Ramadan, raccolgono fondi per costruire nuove moschee e, soprattutto, riducono in frantumi i violoncelli, strumenti degli infedeli...
