![]() ![]() Author: Dantzig George Bernard Publisher: Princeton Univ Pr In real-world problems related to finance, business, and management, mathematicians and economists frequently encounter optimization problems. In this classic book, George Dantzig looks at a wealth of examples and develops linear programming methods for their solutions. He begins by introducing the basic theory of linear inequalities and describes the powerful simplex method used to solve them. Treatments of the price concept, the transportation problem, and matrix methods are also given, and key mathematical concepts such as the properties of convex sets and linear vector spaces are covered. George Dantzig is properly acclaimed as the 'father of linear programming.' Linear programming is a mathematical technique used to optimize a situation. It can be used to minimize traffic congestion or to maximize the scheduling of airline flights. He formulated its basic theoretical model and discovered its underlying computational algorithm, the 'simplex method,' in a pathbreaking memorandum published by the United States Air Force in early 1948. Linear Programming and Extensions provides an extraordinary account of the subsequent development of his subject, including research in mathematical theory, computation, economic analysis, and applications to industrial problems. Dantzig first achieved success as a statistics graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley. One day he arrived for a class after it had begun, and assumed the two problems on the board were assigned for homework. When he handed in the solutions, he apologized to his professor, Jerzy Neyman, for their being late but explained that he had found the problems harder than usual. About six weeks later, Neyman excitedly told Dantzig, 'I've just written an introduction to one of your papers. Read it so I can send it out right away for publication.' Dantzig had no idea what he was talking about. He later learned that the 'homework' problems had in fact been two famous unsolved problems in statistics. € 67,60

![]() ![]() Author: Derolf Shane (ILT), Letzig Michael (ILT) Publisher: Random House Childrens Books 'While walking through a toy store, the day before today, I overheard a crayon box with many things to say...' Once upon a time, Shane DeRolf wrote a poem. It was a deceptively simple poem, a charming little piece that celebrates the creation of harmony through diversity. The folks at the Ad Council heard it--and liked it so much that they made it the theme for their 1997 National Anti-Discrimination Campaign for Children. Following on the heels of nearly a year's worth of televised public service announcements, Random House is phonored to publish the picture book, illustrated in every color in the crayon box by dazzling newcomer Michael Letzig and conveying the sublimely simple message that when we all work together, the results are much more interesting and colorful. € 12,20

![]() ![]() Author: Danziger Paula, Ross Tony (ILT) Publisher: Penguin Group USA Author Paula Danziger loves to write for and about kids, and kids love her! They especially love her feisty and lovable character Amber Brown. Putnam is pleased to present the third book in the Amber Brown series, Amber Brown Goes Fourth illustrated by Tony Ross), a realistic, poignant portrayal of Amber and her single mom, who are both adjusting to divorce. And like the series, Amber Brown Goes Fourth is highlighted with Danziger's lively, laugh-out-loud, first person narrative. Amber Brown has conquered third grade with her best friend moving away, and chicken pox in London with her Aunt Pam, but now... fourth grade! Still missing Justin and adjusting to her mom beginning to date, Amber is determined to substitute a new friend at school named Brandi as her new best friend. But Amber finds out that you can't 'substitute' a best friend; one has to accept each new friend as they are and let the friendship grow. She wonders how she can keep people who are far away from her -- her dad and Justin -- in her life and whether anything will ever be the same again. Paula Danziger's appeal is also strong with the young adult crowd as well. Her titles in this genre include, The Cat Ate My Gymsuit, Remember Me to Harold Square, The Divorce Express, Can You Sue Your Parents for Malpractice? and Thames Doesn't Rhyme with James. € 14,40
