The attitudes behind the study and collecting of medieval manuscripts are kept central to chapters which explore issues of alteration, restoration, destruction, transmission, facsimiles, and fakes. Though published in conjunction with an exhibition, this is not a catalogue. Rather, it is a scholarly and fascinating study in its own right that will be of interest to modernists as well as medievalists for its recreation of an era's way of viewing and ultimately refashioning medieval art.
