Book (italiano):
The third edition of Theory of Simple Liquids is an updated, advanced, but self-contained introduction to the principles of liquid-state theory. It presents the modern, molecular theory of the structural, thermodynamic interfacial and dynamical properties of the liquid phase of materials constituted of atoms, small molecules or ions. This book leans on concepts and methods form classical Statistical Mechanics in which theoretical predictions are systematically compared with experimental data and results from numerical simulations.

The overall layout of the book is similar to that of the previous two editions however, there are considerable changes in emphasis and several key additions including:

•up-to-date presentation of modern theories of liquid-vapour coexistence and criticality
•areas of considerable present and future interest such as super-cooled liquids and the glass transition
•the area of liquid metals, which has grown into a mature subject area, now presented as part of the chapter ionic liquids

New to this edition

30% new or updated material - The authors have agreed to thoroughly overhaul the text of the 3rd edition, amplifying the discussion and adding new material to deal with the progress made in the fields already covered

New content - the following sections will be added to existing chapters.

In Chapter 5 (Perturbation Theory): a section on the singular perturbations relevant, for example, to binary systems and systems of "sticky" hard spheres;

In Chapter 6 (Inhomogeneous Fluids): (i) following Sect. 6.1, a section on the derivation of the exact expression for the surface tension (in terms of the generalised direct correlation function) and its relation to surface adsorption; and (ii), following Sect. 6.5, a section on density-functional theory of wetting and drying phenomena;

In Chapter 9 (Theories of Time Correlation Functions): a section on the kinetics of rare events, including crystal nucleation;

In Chapter 10 (Ionic Liquids): (i) following Sect. 10.6, a section on recent progress in the theory of electrical double-layers: effective surface charges and the correlations between multivalent ions that lead to effective attractions between like-charged surfaces; and (ii) following Sect. 10.7, a section on polarisable force fields in ionic liquids;

In Chapter 11: following Sect. 11.4, a further section on simple polar liquids dealing with phase diagrams, extended dipoles and network formation, with some reference to water;

New Chapter on soft matter with sections as follows:

Sect. 12.1: on hard-sphere colloids;

Sect. 12.2: on charge-stabilised colloids (updating the present Sect. 10.7, which would now be incorporated here);

Sect. 12.3: on rod-like and plate-like colloids, Onsager theory and beyond, and applications to lyotropic liquid crystals and clays;

Sect 12.4: on polymer solutions. Coarse-grained representations , polymer coils as penetrable-core particles, the gaussian-core model, multi-blob representations of semi-dilute solutions, and star polymers;

Sect. 12.5: on colloid-polymer mixtures. Polymer-induced depletion interactions (Asakura-Oosawa approach and beyond), and perturbation theory of the phase diagram.

Sect. 12.6: on clustering and gelation of "patchy" particles (colloids and proteins).

New subtitle to emphasise new content "With Application to Soft Matter"
