They draw on papers published from 2000 to 2010 to describe the factors behind the emergence of tick-borne diseases; the basic biology of 25 key tick species in the regions and their life cycles, geographical distributions, and significance as vectors, with photos; factors responsible for the spread and distribution of ticks, including climate, land use, and animal movement; tick-borne infections; the geographical distribution of tick-borne pathogens and the vector ticks; and the surveillance and control of ticks and tick-borne diseases, including sampling methods and control options for ixodids and argasids. Half of the volume is devoted to appendices containing tables of geographic distribution data for ticks and tick-borne diseases and identification keys for genera and species of ticks in the Mediterranean basin.
