A Culturally Proficient Society Begins in School
Book (italiano):
Franco et al. share their experiences as school superintendents in California to show current and future leaders and policy makers how to lead socioculturally diverse schools and serve students in an equitable manner. They write from their perspectives of Latina women, noting that most books about educational leadership are from a white, male viewpoint, and arguing for the unique experiences and strengths that women of color bring to school leadership. They share leadership stories from their early lives and careers as teachers up to where they are now, including how they decided to become school leaders, how gender and culture affected their early leadership roles, the role of mentors, their personal qualities, and difficulties they experienced as women of color. They then describe how they used the four tools of cultural proficiency to analyze their autobiographies to identify lessons learned in barriers they faced that impede cultural proficiency, and how the guiding principles serve as core values for their personal, professional, and organizational values and behavior. They end by explaining how other school leaders can develop a leadership for equity plan. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
