The Sociology of Aging
Book (italiano):
Writing in plain language, Harris (sociology, emerita, University of Tennessee-Knoxville) examines the subject of aging from a sociological perspective. After an overview of the field of aging and its basic research methods, she looks at culture and how it shapes human behavior, and examines inequality in our society. She then focuses on the elderly in relation to five major institutions in society: family, the economy, political systems, religion, and education. A final section deals with major issues confronting older people. Concepts are illustrated with vignettes and examples from the press, plus b&w photos and cartoons. This third edition is updated throughout, with new chapters on the imminent retirement of the first baby boomers, assisted living, elder abuse in nursing homes, and the long-term problems facing Medicare and Social Security. The book can be used in a one-semester undergraduate course. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
