Land Acquisition, Displacement and Resettlement in Gujarat
Book (italiano):
Lobo (Centre for Culture and Development, Gujarat, India) and Kumar (a planning consultant working on development planning issues in Gujarat, India) present the results for the state of Gujarat of an all India study on compilation of data on economic development-induced displacement of peoples. They report the data on the number of families displaced by development projects for the period 1948 to 2004 as gathered from some 80,000 gazette notifications, land acquisition documents, and project documentation. They find that some two and a half million people, five percent of the population of Gujarat, fall into the category of displaced, primarily by irrigation and industry. They also explore the impact of displacement and deprivation on various strata of society through a sample survey of households affected by development projects. Data is presented in terms of project and in terms of region. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
