Flag on the Mountain
Book (italiano):
Employing discursive analysis of news media, political speeches, and epic poems, Zanic (media and politics, U. of Zagreb, Croatia) examines how Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian leaders manipulated Balkan cultural motifs in order to mobilize social memories in pursuit of their political and military agendas during the post-Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. Of particular importance to his analysis is the figure of the haiduk, the anti-Ottoman heroic brigand from Balkan folkloric tradition somewhat analogous to the character of Robin Hood.
