The Meanings of Work
Book (italiano):
Antunes (sociology, U. Campinas, Brazil) offers this contemporary Marxist analysis of work under modern global capitalism. Arguing that economic and political upheavals of the last several years reflect an intensifying structural crisis of capitalism, the book characterizes the social order of capitalism with an organismal metaphor, interprets recent history including the Thatcher era and lingering influence in Britain, emphasizes the intertwined nature of work and sociability, and explores the continuing intersections of worker oppression with gender, age, and geography. Ultimately this text argues that work can either buttress capital or provide meaning, and that meaningful life outside of work is only possible when work itself is meaningful.
