Yupiit Yuraryarait
Book (italiano):
The Yup'ik of Alaska have an elaborate repertoire of traditional music and dance, often incorporating masks and ceremonial dress, which represents a complex and often personal expression of their history and culture. This volume offers a full account of the Yup'ik dance, with chapters devoted to the different kinds of dance and songs, specific dance events, and the history of how this form, so central to Yup'ik culture, was nearly obliterated following the arrival of Christianity. The volume is based on extensive study and interviews with the performers by the three authors: Ann Fienup-Riordan (an anthropologist), James H. Barker (a documentary photographer), and Theresa Arevgaq John (U. of Alaska). Published in an oversized format (10.5x10"), the volume is well-illustrated with b&w photos of the performers and dances, which are also documented on the DVD.
