![]() ![]() Author: Phibbs Richard (PHT), Paredes Alfredo (EDT), Mitchell W. O. (INT) Publisher: Random House Inc Acclaimed photographer Richard Phibbs turns his unique eye for beauty westward. The West, his second book, is an extremely personal view of the beauty and authenticity of the place and its lingering hold on our national consciousness. Once more Phibbs collaborates with Alfredo Paredes, Executive Vice President, Ralph Lauren, his partner in his first monograph, Chasing Beauty. Phibbs's love of the West came naturally. He was born in Calgary, Alberta, home to Canada's Calgary Stampede, one of the world's great rodeos. The landscapes of Phibbs's childhood are the background of his most evocative and authentic images: stark plains and endless prairies, weathered barns and fences, an empty horizon rolling to an open sky. This minimalism rooted in nature shaped Phibbs's aesthetic from the beginning. Peopling the western landscapes of his childhood was that archetypal hero, the cowboy. Phibbs's modern cowboys are sensitively rendered; looking into their eyes, you connect with decades of tradition while experiencing an electric shock of immediacy. Phibbs's artful images — iconic portraits of cowboys, horses as wild and free as the wide-open spaces, a dog working its herd with skillful grace, a saddle weathered with work and time — find their deserved setting in Parades's careful editing, with comparisons and contrasts that amplify each photo's emotional resonance. With the eye that brings Ralph Lauren's vision to life in stores and showrooms around the world, Parades crafts a book that is, truly, a tribute to the American spirit. First, he chased beauty. Now Phibbs chases the legend. € 58,00

![]() ![]() Author: Royal Academy of Arts London (COR), Pare Richard (PHT) Publisher: Harry N Abrams Inc This fascinating book charts the dazzling trajectory of Russian avant-garde architecture during the brief but intense period of design and construction that took place from c. 1922 to 1935. Fired by the radical new language of Constructivist artists, such architects as Konstantin Melnikov, Moisei Ginzburg, and the Vesnin brothers produced designs whose innovative style embodied the energy and optimism of the new Soviet Socialist state. Streamlined, flat-roofed, and white-walled, their extraordinarily novel buildings must have seemed like alien forms. Architectural photographer Richard Pare has spent the last 15 years documenting the remains and ruins of these structures. Here, his spectacular photographs are juxtaposed with vintage images, ephemera, and drawings and paintings by artists such as Malevich, Tatlin, Popova, and Lissitzky. € 47,30

![]() ![]() Author: Phibbs Richard (PHT), Cunningham Michael (FRW), Paredes Alfredo (EDT), Paredes Alfredo (CRT) Publisher: Random House Inc “I'm in constant search of chasing beauty, chasing hope—I'm not interested in the dark.” The celebrated photographer Richard Phibbs, known for his celebrity portraits and iconic ad campaigns for Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, and more, has an unwavering eye for beauty. Many theorists argue that beauty is subjective, a product of individual preference, but the images from Phibbs' archive of work from 1997–2009, edited, sequenced, and collected in Chasing Beauty, may put that argument to rest. The book is a deeply personal labor of love, affirming Phibbs' belief that photographs can change, inspire, and motivate. Alfredo Paredes, one of the creative minds behind Polo Ralph Lauren, approached Phibbs with the idea of making a monograph—with one caveat: Phibbs was to step back and relinquish control. Paredes had a vision in mind of taking Phibbs' aesthetic and selecting images that would realize his unique eye for beauty. The result is a fascinating juxtaposition of photographs that excite, tantalize, shock, and surprise. A delicate and gorgeous rose is followed by the rawness of a dirty rugby player; a pair of horses is set beside a female nude. These combinations highlight undeniable beauty of both natural and human origin, and show us that if you only look beauty can be found anywhere. “Sometimes things cannot be expressed in words—that's what is so expressive, emotional, or revealing about a photograph. Just look and enjoy it. It reveals that exact fleeting moment in time—that's all. When I lose my breath a bit, I know that's the picture.” —Richard Phibbs € 44,60

![]() ![]() Author: Pare Richard, Cohen Jean-Louis (INT) Publisher: Monacelli Pr The Lost Vanguard documents the work of modernist architects in the Soviet Union during the years following the 1917 revolution and subsequent civil war. In little more than a decade, some of the most radical buildings of the twentieth century were completed by a small group of architects who developed a new architectural language in support of new social goals of communal life. Rarely published and virtually inaccessible until the collapse of the Soviet regime, these important buildings have remained unknown and unappreciated. This book includes seventy-three structures, starting with the Shabolovka Radio Tower in Moscow and concluding with the Lenin Mausoleum. In between are buildings from all over Moscow (where the greatest concentration of modernist buildings still remains), St. Petersburg, Ivanovo, Ekaterinburg, Kiev, Kharkov, Zaporozhe, Nizhi Novgorod, Sochi, and Baku. The buildings range from grand projects such as Gasprom in Kharkov to a modest bus shelter in Sochi, a rare survivor by an unknown architect. In an essay, architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen surveys the history of the period, providing a context for the emergence of this startling new architecture in parallel to contemporary experiments in Europe. € 83,00

![]() ![]() Author: Baldwin Gordon, Daniel Malcolm R., Greenough Sarah, Pare Richard (CON), Roberts Pam (CON), Taylor Roger (CON) Publisher: Yale Univ Pr Roger Fenton (1819-1869) was England's most celebrated and influential photographer during the 1850s, the “golden age” of this radically new medium. Fenton's majestic pictures of cathedrals, country houses, and varied countryside were without peer in England—as were his views of the royal castles and Houses of Parliament that embodied Britain's power. But Fenton's choice of subjects ranged more widely still: he was among the first to photograph the Kremlin and other landmarks of Moscow and Kiev; he was commissioned in 1855 to document the Crimean War, producing early war photographs; and he created theatrical Orientalist costume pictures and a startling series of lush still lifes. Fenton had first studied law and painting, but soon after he took up the camera he was making photographs that were technically superb and highly original in their handling of composition, perspective, atmosphere, and light. Always he strove to demonstrate that photography could equal the art of painting and even surpass it. He was the force behind the founding of the Photographic Society (later the Royal Photographic Society), which worked to advance the profession and encouraged the exhibition of members' works throughout Britain. In a career of a single decade, Fenton did much to transform photography into a medium of powerful expression and visual delight. This exquisitely produced book—the first comprehensive publication on Fenton in almost twenty years—presents eighty-five of the artist's finest photographs and discusses every aspect of his work and his remarkable career. € 54,60
