![]() ![]() Author: Orner Peter Publisher: Gallucci Bros Namibia, primi Anni Novanta. € 16,50

![]() ![]() Author: Gallant Mavis, Orner Peter (INT) Publisher: New York Review of Books An NYRB Classics Original Mavis Gallant’s two novels are as memorable as her many short stories. Full of wit, whim, and psychological poignancy,A Fairly Good Time, here accompanied by Green Water, Green Sky, encapsulates Gallant’s unparalleled skill as a storyteller. Shirley Perrigny (née Norrington, then briefly Higgins), the heroin of A Fairly Good Time, is an original. Derided by the Parisians she lives among and chided by herfellow Canadians, this young, widowed girl—recently remarried to a French journalistnamed Philippe—is fond of quoting from Jane Austen and Kingsley Amis to describe her life and of using her myopia as a defense against social aggression. Asthe fixed points in Shirley’s life begin to recede—Philippe having apparently thoughnot definitively left—her freewheeling, makeshift and self–abnegating ways cometo seem an aspect of devotion to her fellow man. Could the unreliable protagonistbe the unwitting heroine of her own story? Green Water, Green Sky, Gallant’s first novel, is a darker tale of the fractured family life of Bonnie McCarthy, an American divorcée, and her daughter, Flor. Uprooted and unmoored, mother and daughter live like itinerants—in Venice, Cannes, and Paris—glamorous and dependent. From this untidy life and the false notes of her mother, Flor attempts to flee, with little hope of escape. € 17,75

![]() ![]() Author: Korner Peter (EDT), Schmal Peter Cachola (EDT) Publisher: Prestel Pub Thirty recently built skyscrapers from around the world are celebrated by the 10th anniversary of the International High-Rise Awards. Every year it seems another 'world's tallest building' is planned or completed, signaling its city's prominence as a modern Mecca of industry and civilization. As proven by this compendium of the best in high-rise architecture from the past two years, sustainability, energy, cost efficiency, and user friendly design can distinguish a run-of-the-mill skyscraper from a landmark building. Through photographs, illustrations, and architectural drawings, this collection of magnificent structures focuses on the evolution of high-rise architecture away from the classic office building and towards mixed use projects that will shape the appearance and livability of cities around the world. € 43,45

![]() ![]() Author: Orner Peter Publisher: Back Bay Books Alexander Popper can't stop remembering. Four years old when his father tossed him into Lake Michigan, he was told, Sink or swim, kid. In his mind, he's still bobbing in that frigid water. The rest of this novel's vivid cast of characters also struggle to remain afloat: Popper's mother, stymied by an unhappy marriage, seeks solace in the relentless energy of Chicago; his brother, Leo, shadow boss of the family, retreats into books; paternal grandparents, Seymour and Bernice, once high fliers, now mourn for long lost days; his father, a lawyer and would-be politician obsessed with his own success, fails to see that the family is falling apart; and his college girlfriend, the fiercely independent Kat, wrestles with impossible choices. Covering four generations of the Popper family, Peter Orner illuminates the countless ways that love both makes us whole and completely unravels us. A comic and sorrowful tapestry of memory of connection and disconnection, Love and Shame and Love explores the universals with stunning originality and wisdom. € 13,40

![]() ![]() Author: Orner Peter (EDT), Holmes Annie (EDT), Chikwava Brian (FRW) Publisher: McSweeneys Books The situation in Zimbabwe represents one of the worst humanitarian emergencies today. This book asks the question: How did a country with so much promise ? a stellar education system, a growing middle class, a sophisticated economic infrastructure, a liberal constitution, an independent judiciary, and many of the trappings of Western democracy ? go so wrong? In their own words, Zimbabweans recount their experiences of losing their homes, land, livelihoods, and families as a direct result of political violence. They describe being tortured in detention, firebombed at work, or beaten up or raped to ?punish” votes for the opposition. Those forced to flee to neighboring countries recount their escapes: cutting through fences, swimming across crocodile-infested rivers, and entrusting themselves to human smugglers. This book includes Zimbabweans of every age, class, and political conviction, from farm laborers to academics, doctors to artists, opposition leaders to ordinary Zimbabweans; men and women simply trying to survive as a once-thriving nation heads for collapse. € 14,30

![]() ![]() Author: Dorner Peter Publisher: Univ of Wisconsin Pr Surveying three decades of land reform efforts in Latin America, Peter Dorner draws upon his broad experience as both a policy maker and a researcher specializing in land tenure systems. He argues that the failures of Latin American land reforms are due to a lack of political will and commitment exacerbated by inadequate capital resources. Avoiding polemics, Dorner evaluates the many competing theoretical and ideological positions in the ongoing debates over land reform, from structuralist economics to liberation theology. He then looks at a range of actual reform experiences, including local peasant initiatives and international aid projects. Emphasizing the growing complexity of Latin American economies, Dorner demonstrates that solutions successful in one country may fail in another. He concludes that aid and political pressure from the international community can play only a peripheral role. Recognizing that change must come from within, Latin American countries must develop multifaceted approaches to meet objectives based on their own individual experiences. Dorner warns that “romantic” expectations for future land reform relying on any one solution will continue to lead to disillusionment. If opportunities for the landless population were actually a top priority of governments and power-brokers, Dorner believes, they could be achieved through agrarian reform policies that set clear goals and criteria for implementation. Nevertheless, the potential gains from such a program are, in most cases, more limited now than thirty years ago. € 13,80
