Questo volume si presenta come una summa del pensiero di Alasdair MacIntyre. Il punto di partenza della riflessione etica è la situazione pratica del soggetto agente, nella quale si rivela la direzionalità verso un fine ultimo, un telos che si incarna parzialmente nell'esercizio delle virtù morali e razionali ed è comprensibile solo narrativamente. A un'analisi fenomenologica più approfondita l'esercizio delle virtù appare come attuazione della legge naturale. Tale esercizio tuttavia si rivela impossibile senza il possesso di un bene comune fondamentale, quello dell'amicizia, la quale fornisce all'agente quella distanza dai propri desideri necessaria per ordinare i beni nelle situazioni particolari. Il desiderio, in altri termini, non è un dato positivo immodificabile ma, in quanto proprium del soggetto, ne rivela l'intima natura appetitiva (e quindi teleologica) e razionale. Un proprium paradossale in quanto necessita dell'altro per potersi determinare in modo non reificante.

A 60 anni dalla sua prima apparizione, il testo di MacIntyre sull'inconscio rappresenta un piccolo classico del confronto tra filosofia analitica e psicoanalisi. Catholicism and Democracy is a history of Catholic political thinking from the French Revolution to the present day. Emile Perreau-Saussine investigates the church's response to liberal democracy, a political system for which the church was utterly unprepared.

Looking at leading philosophers and political theologians--among them Joseph de Maistre, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Charles Péguy--Perreau-Saussine shows how the church redefined its relationship to the State in the long wake of the French Revolution. Disenfranchised by the fall of the monarchy, the church in France at first embraced that most conservative of ideologies, 'ultramontanism' (an emphasis on the central role of the papacy). Catholics whose church had lost its national status henceforth looked to the papacy for spiritual authority. Perreau-Saussine argues that this move paradoxically combined a fundamental repudiation of the liberal political order with an implicit acknowledgment of one of its core principles, the autonomy of the church from the state. However, as Perreau-Saussine shows, in the context of twentieth-century totalitarianism, the Catholic Church retrieved elements of its Gallican heritage and came to embrace another liberal (and Gallican) principle, the autonomy of the state from the church, for the sake of its corollary, freedom of religion. Perreau-Saussine concludes that Catholics came to terms with liberal democracy, though not without abiding concerns about the potential of that system to compromise freedom of religion in the pursuit of other goals.

This is a paperbound reprint of a 2005 book. MacIntyre (philosophy, U. of Notre Dame, Indiana) discusses Stein's (1891-1942) beginnings as a philosopher and her life during that same decade. He attributes the neglect of her work in English-language scholarship to views that is in one particular kind of response to German philosophy during the first four decades of the 20th century; and it does not help that she has been canonized. MacIntyre (philosophy, U. of Notre Dame) has reconsidered and extended his ideas since the 1981 and 1984 editions, but retains his central thesis that it is only possible to understand the dominant moral culture of advanced modernity adequately from a standpoint external to that culture.
