Il suo arrivo, che per motivi di sicurezza doveva essere tenuto segreto, fu scoperto attraverso intercettazioni telefoniche e telematiche. Incarcerato inizialmente nella prigione di Jakomini, a Graz, Irving fu trattato come prigioniero politico per avere espresso opinioni ritenute. Secondo la legge austriaca, non poteva essere estradato fino a quando non avesse affrontato il processo in loco. Invischiato nel sistema giudiziario austriaco, che considera una persona colpevole fino a quando non venga provato il contrario, nelle prime sei settimane di prigionia gli venne proibito persino di telefonare a casa. Irving rivela le sue memorie in questa 'oasi di paranoia', un non-luogo dove, del tutto isolati dal resto del mondo, si vive estraniati da quello che dovrebbe essere il sistema di una moderna nazione europea quale l'Austria.
