Tra il 1972 e il 1981 il noto critico e scrittore Sergio Antonielli tenne, per le trasmissioni della Radio Televisione della Svizzera Italiana, alcuni cicli di lezioni che formano una vera storia, per brevi monografie, della letteratura italiana del Novecento. Trascritte nel 1987 da Edoardo Esposito, allievo di Antonielli, esse sono raccolte nel presente volume: un viaggio letterario singolare e affascinante, condotto sotto una guida capace di unire esemplarmente rigore e affabilità, perizia ed eleganza. Proprio grazie a tali caratteristiche, darà vita ad una rocambolesca indagine, che è al centro della narrazione, e che prenderà le mosse da uno spunto molto originale e indovinato: la ricorrenza settennale di un delitto efferato, ma inspiegabile, commesso cioè senza apparenti motivazioni.
