Non si tratta di mettere la poesia al servizio della rivoluzione, piuttosto di mettere la rivoluzione al servizio della poesia. Questi Appunti permettono di conoscere in modo più profondo il pensiero di Debord che, durante la seconda metà del secolo scorso, condusse un'incessante 'guerra del tempo' dentro e contro la propria epoca, considerata come una glaciazione 'spettacolare-mercantile' della storia. In questi Appunti lo vediamo via via progettare e mettere a fuoco alcune delle proprie mosse teoriche, iperpolitiche, cinematografiche, linguistiche, autobiografiche, in particolare relative alla conduzione dell'Internazionale Situazionista, alla memoria storica del recente movimento delle occupazioni del maggio francese del 1968 come a quella della Fronda antiassolutistica del Diciassettesimo secolo, alla preparazione dei suoi lungometraggi cinematografici, alla progettazione di un dizionario critico della distruzione contemporanea del linguaggio comune, fino alla stesura di un resoconto della propria vita che per il fondo come per la forma di 'confessione cinica' vessi e demoralizzi le autorità contemporanee.

In questi saggi, scritti da Debord fra il 1955 e il 1988, ritroviamo a più di trent'anni di distanza un'altra delle sue geniali intuizioni, ossia la prefigurazione di una società in cui la pur necessaria lotta contro l'inquinamento avrebbe presto assunto un carattere statuale e regolamentare buono solo a creare nuove specializzazioni, nuovi dicasteri, nuove burocrazie... Così, sullo sfondo della celebre critica situazionista alla società dello spettacolo, se ne delinea un'altra altrettanto implacabile: quella a un certo ecologismo mistificatorio, molto alla moda, che non a caso si è con il tempo trasformato nell'immancabile complice della green economy. Per contrastare un simile appiattimento dell'ambiente e il conseguente addomesticamento comportamentale dei suoi abitanti, bisogna piuttosto ripartire dagli spazi della vita quotidiana, da quella pratica psicogeografica che consente di sperimentare un uso ludico del territorio e dunque realizzare possibilità inedite, persino fantascientifiche. E sta qui il senso che attraversa gli scritti di Debord: in una situazione come quella in cui ci troviamo a vivere, non ci resta che «considerare il peggio e combattere per il meglio».

Questo è il racconto/resoconto di una partita al Kriegspiel, ovvero al Gioco della Guerra. I due autori non sono che i due avversari che l'hanno giocata. Per capire le regole e lo spirito del gioco, occorre consultare i materiali riportati in appendice. 'Se nel libro del 1967 ('La società dello spettacolo') Debord aveva lasciato intendere a tratti che la grande trasformazione era ancora in fieri - pur essendo già profondamente sociale nella sua natura ma non ancora completa - nei Commentari (diciassette anni dopo), il filo del discorso può ripartire. Ma lo può fare solo prendendo atto che la grande trasformazione spettacolare è conclusa, al punto che essa modella ormai anche le azioni dei dominatori, rendendo irreversibile la loro trasformazione in «casta». 'The Rise and Fall of the 'Spectacular' Commodity-Economy', an analysis of the Watts riots in Los Angeles in the summer of 1965, when much of the city's black population fought thousands of police and National Guard for several days, was published as a pamphlet by the Situationist International in 1965. So, two years later, was 'The Explosion Point of Ideology in China', which examined and celebrated the decomposition of bureaucratic power and its ideology in China. 'A Sick Planet', written in 1971, is an extremely prescient polemic on global environmental degradation and was originally intended to appear in the 13th issue of the Internationale Situationniste which was never published.
