![]() ![]() Author: Kitschelt Herbert, McGann Anthony J. Publisher: Univ of Michigan Pr Winner of the American Political Science Association's 1996 Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award. The rise of new political competitors on the radical right is a central feature of many contemporary European party systems. The first study of its kind based on a wide array of comparative survey data, The Radical Right in Western Europe: A Comparative Analysis provides a unifying framework to explain why rightist parties are electorally powerful in some countries but not in others. The book argues that changes in social structure and the economy do not by themselves adequately explain the success of extremist parties. Instead we must look to the competitive struggles among parties, their internal organizational patterns, and their long-term ideological traditions to understand the principles governing their success. Radical right authoritarian parties tend to emerge when moderate parties converge toward the median voter. But the success of these parties depends on the strategy employed by the right-wing political actors. Herbert Kitschelt's in-depth analysis, based on the experiences of rightist parties in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, and Britain, reveals that the broadest appeal is enjoyed by parties that couple a fierce commitment to free markets with authoritarian, ethnocentric--or even racist--messages. The author also shows how a country's particular political constituency or its intellectual and organizational legacies may allow right-wing parties to diverge from these norms and still find electoral success. The book concludes by exploring the interaction between the development of the welfare state, cultural pluralization through immigrants, and the growth of the extreme right. Herbert Kitschelt is Professor of Political Science at both Duke University and Humboldt University, Berlin. Anthony McGann is a Ph.D. candidate in political science at Duke University. € 37,20

![]() ![]() Author: Boudagher-Fadel M. K., Banner F. T. Ph.D., Whittaker J. E., Simmons M. D. (CON) Publisher: Kluwer Academic Pub The planktonic foraminifera have, for over forty years, been recognised to be the most valuable stratigraphic indices for marine sediments of Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic age. However, their evolutionary origins in the Jurassic and their development, morphological evolution and systematics in the Early Cretaceous have, until now, been poorly understood. This book illustrates for the first time all the published taxa known from the Jurassic, and clarifies and corrects their taxonomy. The taxonomy and stratigraphic distribution of the Early Cretaceous planktonic foraminifera are also revised, and all of the published species are illustrated, using the type specimens. The systematics of the Early Cretaceous forms are clearly set out, both for species and for genera: their evolution is explained as well as the ecological importance of the morphological changes they have undergone. Moreover, by analogy with the Recent Globigerinacea the palaeoenvironmental significance of these Early Cretaceous taxa is discussed. The book deals with 136 species belonging to 26 genera, five of which - Compactogerina, Haeuslerina (of the Jurassic), Lilliputianelloides; Claviblowiella and Planohedbergella (of the Cretaceous) - are new. Range charts are provided, as are extensive keys for the more important genera. Superbly illustrated, with 65 high-quality plates, this work will be an invaluable reference for all micropalaeontolists and biostratigraphers worldwide, with many species illustrated by SEM for the first time. This is the first book to collate all known information on the early evolutionary origins of the planktonic foraminifera. € 178,30

(TRN) Publisher: Lightning Source Inc Perhaps the first English translation of Kepler's 1619 explanation of musical relations and their application to the motion of the planets. It had little influence because Kepler favored a realist Platonic view of geometry that differed from the algebra and symbolism that had become popular over the previous century, and the discovery of inertia and Newton's work soon contradicted the Aristotelian theory of motion Kepler based his work on. His ideas however bear some resemblance to the concept of dynamic resonance used by astronomers today. The translation is clear and precise, well supported by notes, and accompanied by the original illustrations. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or. € 48,40

![]() ![]() Author: Dolan Robert J., Simon Hermann Publisher: Free Pr In today's hypercompetitive global marketplace, a company's pricing policy can make or break the bottom line. Yet a surprising number of firms attempt to increase profits without the aid of a carefully and creatively designed pricing strategy. Now, in this long-awaited book, the world's two leading price experts Robert J. Dolan and Hermann Simon take managers beyond conventional thinking to show how their breakthrough system of 'power pricing' will improve the bottom line by an order of magnitude. They destroy popular but not necessarily financially savvy ideas on pricing, such as relying on a standard markup on cost rule. They expose as passive the 'strategy' of letting the market or a competitor 'set the price.' But the key is in what they provide: the tools by which the pedestrian pricer can become a 'power pricer' who achieves quantum leaps in financial performance by aggressively implementing sophisticated pricing strategies. Dolan and Simon combine their international expertise and know-how to reveal the latest breakthroughs in pricing tactics. Drawing on their firsthand experience with firms throughout the world, they make available for the first time the logic behind the actual practices of 'power pricers' engaged in fierce global competition. Market segmentation, promotional pricing, competitive strategic pricing, international pricing, nonlinear pricing, interrelated product line pricing, and time-customized pricing are just a few of the crucial concepts which the authors explore and explain when and how to implement. The authors' approach to creating 'power pricers' is twofold. They specify the practices of the strategic pricers among the world's most successful firms and then lay out a four-dimensional system to attain this level of pricing sophistication and resulting profit improvement. Dolan and Simon draw their portrait of the power pricer in four critical dimensions: viewpoint on pricing, fact file support pricing, tools and scope of analysis, and determination and implementation. The authors argue that firms must view pricing as a key and highly manageable element in the profit equation, worthy of attention equal to that accorded to sales volume and costs. Companies must have data at their finger tips which are more accurate, timely, relevant, and dissaggregated than their competitors'. Using these data to create a systematic analysis of customers and competitors, companies will be able to create and assess pricing scenarios to achieve long-term profitability. This targeted, quadrupled approach to transforming the bottom line by managing price leaves no strategy or option unturned. Power Pricing is a highly detailed yet practically focused book which will become required reading for business leaders; general managers; marketing, product, and brand managers; accountants, financial managers, and marketing students, world-wide.

![]() ![]() Author: Prus Boleslaw, Welsh David J. (TRN), Tolczyk Dariusz, Zaranko Anna, Welsh David J. Publisher: Central European Univ Pr About the Central European Classics series: 'Half a continent's worth of forgotten genius.'--The Guardian The new Central European Classics series was born some ten years ago in the dim cafes of Budapest and Prague when General Editor Timothy Garton Ash began jotting down titles recommended to him by local writers. Its aim is to take these works of nineteenth- and twentieth-century classic fiction 'out of the ghetto,' onto the shelves of Western booksellers, and into the consciousness of Western readers. The result of extensive discussion among writers, scholars, and critics, the rich tradition of Central European fiction has been culled to offer previously unavailable works written in Czech, Hungarian, and Polish that lend themselves perfectly to powerful and accurate translation. Specially commissioned introductions by leading Central European writers explain why these titles have become classics in their own country, while at the same time, the works stand on their own as great literature in English. With future titles such as a new edition of Boleslaw Prus's Polish masterpiece, The Doll, the Central European Classics series will contribute to a deeper understanding of the culture and history of countries which, since the opening of iron curtain, have been coming closer to us in many other ways. The city of Warsaw, under Russian rule in the late 1870s, is the setting for this sweeping panorama of social conflict, political tensions, and personal suffering. The middle-aged hero, Wokulski, bold and successful in business, is being destroyed by his obsessive love for the frigid, aristocratic society 'doll,' Izabela. The embattled aristocracy, the new men of finance, Dickensian tradesmen, and the urban poor all come vividly to life on the vast, superbly detailed canvas against which Wokulski's personal tragedy is played out. For this edition, the existing translation by David Welsh has been carefully revised under the supervision of the leading Polish critic, Stanislaw Bara'nczak. A chapter excised by the Tsarist censor is included as an appendix. Bara'nczak also contributes to an authoritative and illuminating new introduction to what is arguably the greatest Polish novel of the nineteenth century. € 8,10
