Il curatore, Giuliano Marini (Pisa, 1932), è professore ordinario di Filosofia politica nella Facoltà di Scienze politiche dell'Università di Pisa. Si è occupato a lungo della filosofia politica hegeliana e della sua eredità nel mondo contemporaneo; da tempo si occupa del cosmopolitismo kantiano e della sua attualità.

Viene qui presentata per la prima volta al pubblico italiano l'edizione critica delle Lezioni di filosofia della religione di Hegel, pubblicata in Germania nel 1983 a cura di Walter Jaeschke. In questa edizione, di cui presentiamo qui la traduzione del primo dei tre volumi, viene fatta valere la tripartizione operata da Hegel, nel corso delle sue lezioni, tra 'Concetto della religione', 'Religione determinata' e 'Religione compiuta'. L'edizione critica, e altrettanto l'edizione italiana, presentano per ciascuna delle tre parti il testo dei corsi del 1821 (Manoscritto), 1824, 1827 e 1831. Le Lezioni di filosofia della religione, che Hegel tenne a Berlino tra il 1821 e il 1831, consentono di avere una visione d'insieme dello sviluppo della riflessione filosofico-religiosa hegeliana dell'intero periodo berlinese. I quattro corsi delle lezioni rappresentano infatti lo specchio fedele dei rinnovati tentativi di Hegel di dare una fondazione persuasiva e cogente della sua filosofia speculativa della religione. Il presente volume comprende la traduzione dei testi dell' Introduzione e del Concetto della religione. Viene presentata al lettore italiano anche la importante introduzione di Walter Jaeschke

One of the central problems in the history of moral and political philosophy since antiquity has been to explain how human society and its civil institutions came into being. In attempting to solve this problem philosophers developed the idea of natural law, which for many centuries was used to describe the system of fundamental, rational principles presumed universally to govern human behavior in society. By the eighteenth century the doctrine of natural law had engendered the related doctrine of natural rights, which gained reinforcement most famously in the American and French revolutions. According to this view, human society arose through the association of individuals who might have chosen to live alone in scattered isolation and who, in coming together, were regarded as entering into a social contract.

In this important early essay, first published in English in this definitive translation in 1975 and now returned to print, Hegel utterly rejects the notion that society is purposely formed by voluntary association. Indeed, he goes further than this, asserting in effect that the laws brought about in various countries in response to force, accident, and deliberation are far more fundamental than any law of nature supposed to be valid always and everywhere. In expounding his view Hegel not only dispenses with the empiricist explanations of Hobbes, Hume, and others but also, at the heart of this work, offers an extended critique of the so-called formalist positions of Kant and Fichte.

La Fenomenologia espone 'il sapere nel suo divenire', cioè le varie tappe dell'autodispiegamento dialettico dello Spirito nella Storia. Essa comprende le diverse figure dello Spirito come stazioni del cammino mediante il quale lo Spirito diviene Sapere puro ovvero Spirito assoluto. In ogni suddivisione fondamentale di questa scienza vengono considerate: la coscienza, l'autocoscienza, la ragione osservativa e attiva, lo Spirito nelle sue varie forme (etico, colto, morale, religioso), per giungere allo Spirito assoluto o Sapere puro. La 'Filosofia dello spirito' costituisce la terza parte della 'Enciclopedia delle Scienze filosofiche in compendio' pubblicata da Hegel nel 1817 e poi notevolmente ampliata con le edizioni del 1827 e del 1830. E' in questo volume che si trova quella dottrina dello 'spirito oggettivo' che è una delle parti del pensiero hegeliano che ha avuto maggiore risonanza e alla quale si sono via via richiamate varie forme di pensiero politico organicistico, statalistico, liberale e marxistico.

Lo scopo di questo lavoro è quello di 'tradurre' nel senso letterale del termine, cioè 'condurre al di là' delle difficoltà il lettore, affinché comprenda la straordinaria ricchezza della Fenomenologia dello spirito, opera definita da D.F. Strauss 'l'alfa e l'omega delle opere hegeliane'.

Il volume, curato da Giuseppe Cantillo, raccoglie le lezioni sulla filosofia dello spirito che Hegel tenne all'università di Jena nel 1803-1804 e nel 1805-1806, anni nei quali avvenne l'elaborazione del sistema filosofico i cui primi abbozzi risalgono al periodo precendente. Among the most influential parts of the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel (1770-1831) were his ethics, his theory of the state, and his philosophy of history.

The Philosophy of Right (1821), the last work published in Hegel's lifetime, is a combined system of moral and political philosophy, or a sociology dominated by the idea of the state. Here Hegel repudiates his earlier assessment of the French Revolution as 'a marvelous sunrise' in the realization of liberty. Rejecting the republican form of government, he espouses an idealized form of a constitutional monarchy, whose ultimate power rests with the sovereign.
