Se «Il poeta è una radio» che «Riceve troppi messaggi», il poeta Jack Spicer non può che scrivere nel modo in cui scrive. Come la radio trasmette molti programmi, in un flusso linguistico pressoché ininterrotto e continuamente variabile grazie al semplice gesto di cambiare canale, il poeta costruisce, decostruisce e ricostruisce la lingua (come dichiara già il titolo 'Language') attraversandone tutti i registri possibili, dal lirico al comico fino al metalinguistico. Si respira, in questi testi, un'aria di grande libertà, che non risparmia, riutilizzandoli, nemmeno materiali linguistici preesistenti come canzoni o testi classici. «Inventiamo un linguaggio diverso per la poesia / E per il cuore - agrammaticale», scrive programmaticamente Spicer. E, in maniera quasi altrettanto programmatica, nelle ultime tre delle sette sezioni del libro, l'inventiva e la libertà investono la lingua e la grammatica nelle loro componenti minime, in una sorta di esplosione finale che ha per protagonisti morfemi, fonemi e grafemi.

«A rosary of lies» fu l'espressione usata da Jack Spicer per descrivere le sue 'Quindici false proposizioni contro dio' a Russel Fitzgerald, giovane poeta e poi amante (vedi qui la poesia intitolata Per Russ) incontrato durante il processo all'Urlo di Ginsberg, il 9 settembre 1957. Particolarmente pertinente per quanto riguarda l'evocazione di alcuni aspetti emblematici e ricorrenti della poesia di Spicer, ho scelto di utilizzare quest'espressione per riunire in un solo gesto editoriale tre raccolte - 'Ammonimenti', 'Un libro di musica', 'Quindici false proposizioni contro dio' - tutte successive ad 'Afier Lorca' (1957), e composte nell'anno 1958. A causa della sua importanza specifica nell'evoluzione della poetica dell'Outsidé, ho preferito escludere il poemetto Billy the Kid, sempre composto nel 1958. Ad esso sarà riservata un'edizione particolare, appositamente concepita per mettere in valore la gittata poetica e il colore musicale di questo componimento.
