For a food-obsessed culture it is surprising how little we actually know about many of the creatures we consume. Take the iconic New England shellfish. Inspired by her summers spent raking clams in Wellfleet, Barbara Brennessel has written an overview of the regional shellfish industry. She's the mascot for the University of Maryland's sports teams (their slogan: Fear the Turtle) and her ancestors were nearly driven to extinction by Victorians who indulged in turtle soup. But as she buries herself in the mud every night to sleep, the diamondback terrapin knows none of this. The size of a dinner plate, she can live at least forty years and is the only turtle in North America who can live in brackish and salty waters.

The diamondback terrapin is named for the beautiful concentric rings on its shell. Its habitat ranges from Cape Cod to Corpus Christi, Texas, with seven subspecies identified along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Several diamondback populations have been the subjects of ecological studies in recent years, but most of that information was buried in scientific literature and various state and federal reports-until now.

Synthesizing all known research on this remarkable animal, Diamonds in the Marsh is the first full-scale natural history of the diamondback terrapin. Focusing on the northern diamondback, Barbara Brennessel examines its evolution, physiology, adaptations, behavior, growth patterns, life span, genetic diversity, land use, reproduction, and early years. She also discusses its relationship to humans, first as an important food source from colonial times through the nineteenth century, and more recently as a cultural icon, frequently depicted in Native American art and design. She concludes with a look at contemporary hazards to the terrapin, and urges continued study of this marvelous creature.

Marbodo di Rennes (1035-1123), coltissimo prelato e poeta, è autore di un poemetto 'De lapidibus' e di altri tre testi sullo stesso argomento, due in prosa e uno ancora in versi redatti, forse, nel 1093. Qui riuniti in un'edizione tradotta e commentata, costituiscono una silloge capace di scrutare la natura fascinosa delle gemme preziose, per un epoca che ne percepiva a un tempo la polarità di scienza e di allegoria.

Fra la seconda metà del secolo XI e gli inizi del successivo, quasi contemporaneamente al sorgere della poesia dei trovatori, alcuni scrittori latini che ricoprirono importanti cariche ecclesiastiche nelle città della Loira e delle regioni circostanti (Angers, Tours, Orléans, Poitiers, Rennes, Chartres) svilupparono una sorprendente produzione di lettere poetiche indirizzate a donne e caratterizzate da toni oscillanti fra l'ammirazione, l'affetto, la complicità e una ardente sensualità. Tra gli autori spiccano i nomi di Balderico di Bourgueil (1045/1046-1130), Marbodo di Rennes (1035-1123) e Ildeberto di Lavardin (1055-1133). Le destinatarie sono grandi signore, come la contessa Adele di Blois o la regina Matilde d'Inghilterra, oppure giovani monache appassionate di poesia come Muriel, Costanza, Emma e Agnese, o semplicemente ragazze di buona famiglia che frequentavano le scuole monastiche per poi tornare nel mondo. Se in un componimento come quello dedicato da Balderico alla contessa Adele - che i cortigiani 'contemplano senza ricompensa', reputando 'un grande favore nutrirsi di vane speranze' - sembra delinearsi già la figura della dama inaccessibile delle corti trobadoriche, nelle lettere indirizzate a giovani religiose o a nobili educande i premurosi insegnamenti morali - mantenetevi pure, pregate, leggete i testi sacri... - si volgono spesso in galanteria quando non in bruciante passione. Come in una serie di poesie inviate da Marbodo ad alcune amicae del monastero di Notre Dame a Le Ronceray e sulle quali per molto tempo ha gravato un imbarazzato silenzio editoriale,

Tutte le religioni sono costantemente esposte a diventare strumenti di oppressione e di alienazione. Noi possiamo lottare contro questo snaturamento della fede, della nostra come di quella altrui: sono parole che Pierre Claverie (1938-1996), vescovo di Orano in Algeria, ha vissuto radicalmente, pagando con la vita la fedeltà quotidiana a questa missione. Nato ad Algeri da una famiglia di francesi, all'età di vent'anni si rende conto di aver vissuto in una 'bolla coloniale' e di non conoscere realmente la realtà e cultura algerina. Inizia così ad approfondire la conoscenza dell'Islam, impara con passione la lingua araba e, ordinato vescovo, lavora per costruire luoghi di incontro tra cristiani e musulmani, allacciando con il popolo algerino una relazione di una rara intensità. Il 1° agosto 1996 viene assassinato. Ma la sua morte non è accaduta invano: il giorno del funerale la chiesa è gremita di cristiani e musulmani e il suo impegno continua ad essere portato avanti da altri. In un periodo storico in cui una pacifica e armoniosa convivenza tra popoli e comunità di diverse fedi sembra utopia, la vita di Pierre Claverie è un segno luminoso e fonte di concreta speranza.

Questo volume riunisce i due più famosi lapidari medievali, quelli di Marbodo di Rennes e di Ildegarda di Bingen. In essi si esplorano le proprietà terapeutiche sottili delle pietre preziose, e i relativi modi per utilizzarle.
