Here are the subjects,familiar yet freshly observed: the central importance of the family and the household gods, the echoes of the old Catholic rituals, a couple's courage in dealing as they can with a daughter's loss, the hundred daily blessings, things we take for granted or never see, until tragedy brings home to us the rock-hard sacredness of what we have: the evening light, the wren's consoling song, the forlorn Schwinn bicycle in the driveway, the tumbler pigeons your father cared for, the desolation of the empty packing plant facing the Jersey meadowlands, the stark dignity of an ancient grandmother praying in Italian as the TV preacher seems to call to her, the white hair of your wife packing mud up around the roots of the cabbages as she has for decades. All this, and so much more, in lines which capture the New Jersey idiom as William Carlos Williams caught it, but softer this time round, with the winds of the Adriatic mingling with the colder North Atlantic.'—Paul Mariani

Nel corso del Ventennio, fra la concezione mitica degli States mediata dai cultori della letteratura d'oltreoceano - come Pavese e Vittorini - e l'atteggiamento critico suggerito dal regime, si diffuse una visione pił oggettiva degli Stati Uniti, elaborata da quegli scrittori che scelsero gli Usa come meta dei propri viaggi di conoscenza. Oltre a chiarire il ruolo del cinema e dell'emigrazione nella diffusione dell'american dream e i complessi rapporti fra la cultura fascista e quella statunitense, il volume - che si concentra in particolare sulle opere di Ciarlantini, Barzini jr, Depero, Soldati, Borgese e Cecchi - analizza le tematiche pił frequenti nelle riflessioni letterarie del Ventennio sull'America: dalla traversata dell'Atlantico all'incontro straniante con le megalopoli e i grattacieli, dalla segregazione razziale al problema dell'alcolismo e del proibizionismo, dalla condizione disagiata dei nostri emigranti all'emancipazione delle american girls. Da queste testimonianze č possibile trarre non pochi spunti per una riflessione pił consapevole sul rapporto fra il nostro e il Nuovo Mondo, e per chiarire oggi, nel mezzo di una nuova crisi mondiale, le radici della nostra percezione dell'America, paese ferocemente contestato, ma nel contempo visceralmente amato.
