![]() ![]() Author: Hamilton Alexander; Sioli M. (cur.) € 12,00

![]() ![]() Author: Hamilton Alexander, Madison James, Jay John, Killavey Jim (NRT) Publisher: Golden Words The Federalist Papers are a series of 85 articles, written between 1787 and 1788, advocating for the ratification of the United States Constitution. The articles were written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, under the pseudonym 'Publius.' Alexander Hamilton was an active delegate at the Constitutional Convention, and became the first Secretary of the Treasury. John Jay became the first Chief Justice of the United States. ![]() ![]() Author: Hamilton Alexander, Madison James, Jay John, Beeman Richard (EDT) Publisher: Penguin Group USA In time for the upcoming election season, Penguin presents a series of six portable, accessible, and—above all—essential reads from American political history, selected by leading scholars. Series editor Richard Beeman, author of The Penguin Guide to the U.S. Constitution, draws together the great texts of American civic life, including the founding documents, pivotal historical speeches, and important Supreme Court decisions, to create a timely and informative mini-library of perennially vital issues. Written at a time when furious arguments were raging about the best way to govern America, The Federalist Papers had the immediate practical aim of persuading New Yorkers to accept the newly drafted Constitution in 1787. In this they were supremely successful, but their influence also transcended contemporary debate to win them a lasting place in discussions of American political theory. Acclaimed by Thomas Jefferson as “the best commentary on the principles of government which ever was written,' The Federalist Papers make a powerful case for power-sharing between State and Federal authorities and have only risen in legal influence over the last two centuries. Beeman’s analysis helps clarify the goals, at once separate and in concert, of Madison, Hamilton, and Jay during their writing, and his selections show the array of issues—both philosophical and policy-specific—covered by this body of work. € 12,50

Still hotly debated and open to often controversial interpretations, the arguments first presented here by three of America's greatest patriots and political theorists were created during a critical moment in our nation's history, providing readers with a running ideological commentary on the crucial issues facing a democracy. ![]() ![]() Author: Hamilton Alexander, Madison James, Jay John, Sunstein Cass R. (INT) Publisher: Belknap Pr Amid growing anxieties about the proposed federal government, the authors of the Federalist Papers advocated ratification ofthe U.S. Constitution. Serialized in several NewYork newspapers between October 1787 and August 1788, and published in book form in 1788 as The Federalist, these 8S papers by 'Publius' (Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay) constitute one of the greatest American contributions to political thought. In his introductory essay, Cass R. Sunstein argues that in rejecting the claims of classical republicanism Publius embraces deliberative democracy. He also reminds us that Publius's arguments bear on current political debates and 'offer lessons for making war and making peace, and for domestic emergencies of many different kinds.' The John Harvard Library edition reproduces the text of the first book edition, modernizing spelling and capitalization. Since 1959 The John Harvard Library has been instrumental in publishing essential American writings in authoritative editions. € 17,90

![]() ![]() Author: Hamilton Alexander, Madison James, Frisch Morton J. (EDT) Publisher: Liberty Fund The Pacificus-Helvidius debates of 1793-1794 are among the most significant in American history, virtually equal in importance with the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858. In these debates, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison (Pacificus and Helvidius, respectively) conflict on the extent of the foreign policy powers of the legislative and executive branches of government. Hamilton advocated strong executive control over foreign policy, whereas Madison argued that Washington's Neutrality Proclamation of 1793 would interfere with the Senate's war-making powers. Professor Morton J. Frisch, emeritus professor of political science at Northern Illinois University, writes in the Introduction: 'The open-ended character of some of the constitutional provisions afforded opportunities for extending the powers of government beyond their specified limits. Although not given prior sanction by the Constitutional Convention, such additions served to provide a more complete definition of powers without actually changing the ends of government.' The Neutrality Proclamation brought the issue to the forefront and inspired this classic debate. The Liberty Fund edition brings together for the first time all the relevant original documents of this controversy: Washington's Neutrality Proclamation, the full text of the Pacificus and Helvidius letters, Jefferson's letter to Madison imploring him to answer Hamilton's arguments, and Hamilton's Americanus letters, intended as the final response to Madison's rebuttal. The introduction by Professor Frisch places the work in historical context. € 18,30

Publisher: Barnes & Noble The Federalist, by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, is part of the Barnes & Noble Classics series, which offers quality editions at affordable prices to the student and the general reader, including new scholarship, thoughtful design, and pages of carefully crafted extras. Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences—biographical, historical, and literary—to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works. A classic of American political thought, The Federalist is a series of eighty-five essays by three authors—Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay—the purpose of which was to gain support for the proposed new Constitution of the United States, a document that many considered too radical. Most of the “papers” were published in periodicals as the vote on approving it drew near. Without the support of these powerfully persuasive essays, the Constitution most likely would not have been ratified and America might not have survived as a nation. Beginning with an assault upon the country's first constitution, the Articles of Confederation, the authors of The Federalist present a masterly defense of the new system. Hamilton, Madison, and Jay—three of our most influential founders—comment brilliantly on issue after issue, whether it be the proper size and scope of government, taxation, or impeachment. Today lawmakers and politicians frequently invoke these commentaries, more than 200 years after they first appeared. Written in haste and during a time of great crisis in the new American government, the articles were not expected to achieve immortality. Today, however, many historians consider The Federalist as the third most important political document in American history, just behind the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution itself. They have become the benchmark of American political philosophy, and the best explanation of what the Founding Fathers were trying to achieve. Robert A. Ferguson is George Edward Woodberry Professor in Law, Literature, and Criticism at Columbia University; he teaches in both the Law School and the English Department. His books include Law and Letters in American Culture, The American Enlightenment, 1750–1820, and Reading the Early Republic. € 11,10
