La traccia dominante che emerge dagli esempi esaminati in questo libro è caratterizzata da una forma di negazione: l'attivazione del pubblico nell'arte partecipativa si pone in antitesi rispetto alla sua controparte mitica, il passivo consumo spettatoriale. Il desiderio di rendere attivo il pubblico nell'arte partecipativa è allo stesso tempo un impulso a emanciparlo dallo stato di alienazione indotto dall'ordine ideologico dominante - sia questo il capitalismo consumista, il socialismo totalitario o la dittatura militare. L'arte partecipativa mira a ricostruire e a realizzare uno spazio comune e collettivo di impegno sociale condiviso. Quest'obiettivo viene perseguito sia con gesti costruttivi di impatto sociale, che confutano l'ingiustizia del mondo proponendo un'alternativa, sia attraverso un raddoppiamento nichilista dell'alienazione, che nega l'ingiustizia e l'assurdità del mondo all'interno dell'opera stessa. In entrambi i casi, l'opera cerca di forgiare un corpo sociale collettivo, co-autoriale e partecipativo - uno attraverso un processo affermativo (la realizzazione utopica), l'altro tramite un processo indiretto (la negazione della negazione). For over a decade, conceptual and performance art has been dominated by participatory art. its champions, such as French curator Nicolas Bourriaud (who invented the term “relational aesthetics” to describe it) and American art historian Grant Kester, believe that by encouraging an audience to join in, the artist can promote new emancipatory social relations. Artificial Hells is the first historical and theoretical overview of socially engaged participatory art. The book follows the trajectory of twentieth-century art and examines key moments in the development of the participatory aesthetic, in both Europe and America. This itinerary takes in Futurism, Dada, situationism, Czechoslovakian Happenings, and Argentinean Conceptualism, and concludes with contemporary artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tania Bruguera and Jeremy Deller.

Since her controversial essay in Artforum in 2006, Claire Bishop has been one of the few to expose the political and aesthetic limitations of this work. In Artificial Hells she not only scrutinizes the claims for democracy and emancipation that the artists and critics make for the work, but also questions the turn to ethical (rather than artistic) criteria invited by such participatory and collaborative art.

Published on the occasion of his exhibition at the Swiss Pavilion of the 2011 Venice Biennale, 'Establishing a Critical Corpus' is the first theoretical book to extensively examine the practice and artworks of Thomas Hirschhorn. His work elicits debate, analysis, and a profound discussion of artistic and social issues. 'Establishing a Critical Corpus' is thus a charged and intense 'textbook,' providing texts and topics 'to think about': Hirschhorn's work in general, a specific part of his work, one of his pieces, issues that extend beyond his work, and so on. These fully illustrated texts constitute the core of the book.

It's bad news when you wake up in the morning and find you've lost your head, especially if it's an especially agreeable and handsome head, but there you go, such things happen. In any case, the man who loses his head in The Man Who Lost His Head isn't about to grin (that is, if he could grin) and bear it. No, he'll make himself a new one, and starting with a pumpkin and moving on to a parsnip and finally picking up a block of wood, he sets about getting it just right. Still, for all his efforts, it somehow isn't right. It isn't the head he had before. It turns out that only a brash bold boy can save the man who lost his head from losing it altogether.

Claire Huchet Bishop's charming parable is illustrated by the great Robert McCloskey, whose books for children include One Morning in Maine, Blueberries for Sal, and the Caldecott Medal–winning Make Way for Ducklings.

The desire to move viewers out of the role of passive observers and into the role of producers is one of the hallmarks of twentieth-century art. This tendency can be found in practices and projects ranging from El Lissitzky's exhibition designs to Allan Kaprow's happenings, from minimalist objects to installation art. More recently, this kind of participatory art has gone so far as to encourage and produce new social relationships. Guy Debord's celebrated argument that capitalism fragments the social bond has become the premise for much relational art seeking to challenge and provide alternatives to the discontents of contemporary life. This publication collects texts that place this artistic development in historical and theoretical context.

Participation begins with writings that provide a theoretical framework for relational art, with essays by Umberto Eco, Bertolt Brecht, Roland Barthes, Peter Burger, Jen-Luc Nancy, Edoaurd Glissant, and Felix Guattari, as well as the first translation into English of Jacques Ranciere's influential "Problems and Transformations in Critical Art." The book also includes central writings by such artists as Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica, Joseph Beuys, Augusto Boal, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Thomas Hirschhorn, and Rirkrit Tiravanija.
