![]() ![]() Author: Allen Grant; Leporini N. (cur.) Fa tutto ciò, però, in modo assolutamente, irresistibilmente, affascinante. € 10,00

![]() ![]() Author: Allen Grant, Ruddick Nicholas (EDT) Publisher: Broadview Pr The controversial subject matter of Grant Allen's novel, The Woman Who Did, made it a major bestseller in 1895. It tells the story of Herminia Barton, a university-educated New Woman who, because of her belief that marriage oppresses women, refuses to marry her lover even though she shares his bed and bears his child. Her ideals come into disastrous conflict with intensely patriarchal late Victorian England. Indeed, Allen intended his novel to shock readers into a serious exploration of some of the major issues in fin de siecle sexual politics, issues that he himself, in various periodical articles under the rubric of the 'Woman Question,' had played a leading role in opening up to public debate. This Broadview edition contains a critical introduction as well as a rich selection of appendices which include excerpts from Allen's writings on women, sex, and marriage; contemporary writings on the 'Sex Problem'; documents pertaining to the Marriage Debate; contemporary responses to the novel; and excerpts from two parodies of the novel. € 19,20

![]() ![]() Author: Hitchcock Ethan Allen, Foreman Grant (EDT), Foreman Grant Publisher: Univ of Oklahoma Pr In 1841 U.S. government authorities sent Major Ethan Allen Hitchcock to Indian Territory to investigate numerous charges of fraud and profiteering by various contractors dealing with the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw Indians, who had been removed from the South during the last decade. Hitchcock's report, filed after four months of travel, exposed such a high level of graft and corruption that his investigation was suppressed and never brought to the attention of Congress. Hitchcock kept nine personal diaries of his travels and observations, however, and they reveal much historic and ethnographic information on Indian life in Indian Territory. He observes how the Indians were adjusting alter removal and includes many details on their customs, beliefs, culture, religion, ceremonies, amusements, industry, tribal councils, and government. To aid the modern reader, editor Grant Foreman provides an introduction and annotations, and Michael D. Green, in his foreword, explains the politics behind Hitchcock's mission to Indian Territory and his accomplishments in advancing ethnographic knowledge. € 23,10
