Nato e vissuto a Firenze in una delle ultime grandi ville patrizie, Sir Harold Acton (1904-1994) è stato uno dei più versatili scrittori inglesi contemporanei. Membro influente del così detto 'Oxford Group', che riunì alcuni dei più noti narratori inglesi, fu poeta, romanziere, storico d'arte, saggista. Ma Acton fu anche testimone e protagonista della Firenze cosmopolita prediletta dagli anglosassoni, nella quale, nell'arco di qualche decennio, vissero personaggi del calibro di Henry James, Edith Wharton, Vernon Lee, D.H. Lawrence, Aldous Huxley, Isadora Duncan, Bernard Berenson e molti altri.
