![]() ![]() Author: Montanelli Indro; Melani E. (cur.) ![]() ![]() Author: Thernstrom Melanie Publisher: Plume In May 1995, a photograph and an anonymous note arrived at The Harvard Crimson that said 'Keep this picture. There will soon be a very juicy story involving this woman.' Soon afterwards, Sinedu Tadesse stabbed to death her roommate, Trang Phuong Ho, and then hung herself. This book recounts the stories of these women, whose admission to Harvard was 'halfway heaven,' a bridge to the American dream after lives of hardship. But they met instead with the darkest of all fates: a tragedy that might have been prevented. Sinedu grew up under communist tyranny in Ethiopia. Trang was born in a Vietnamese forced labor camp, and fled the country with her father and sister to end up on welfare in Boston. Despite their similarities, the two were never friends; Trang was friendly and outgoing, while Sinedu, awkward and shy, had trouble adjusting to a culture vastly different from her own. Drawing upon her astonishing diaries, Thernstrom, a Harvard graduate herself, reconstructs Sinedu's inner life to reveal a girl struggling against isolation and depression. The book reveals Harvard as an institution ill-equipped to deal with mental illness on campus that apparently cared more for its reputation than for its student body. A brilliant synthesis of cultural analysis, psychological study, and first-rate investigative journalism, Halfway Heaven is a haunting exploration of the power of profound loneliness and an expose of one of America's most distinguished universities. € 18,70

![]() ![]() Author: Walker Peter, Simo Melanie Publisher: Mit Pr Invisible Gardens is a composite history of the individuals and firms that definedthe field of landscape architecture in America from 1925 to 1975, a period that spawned asignificant body of work combining social ideas of enduring value with landscapes and gardens thatforged a modern aesthetic. The major protagonists include Thomas Church, Roberto Burle Marx, IsamuNoguchi, Luis Barragan, Daniel Urban Kiley, Stanley White, Hideo Sasaki, Ian McHarg, LawrenceHalprin, and Garrett Eckbo. They were the pioneers of a new profession in America, the first to offeralternatives to the historic landscape and the park tradition, as well as to the suburban sprawl andother unplanned developments of twentieth-century cities and institutions. The work is describedagainst the backdrop of the Great Depression, the Second World War, the postwar recovery, Americancorporate expansion, and the environmental revolution. The authors look at unbuilt schemes as well asactual gardens, ranging from tiny backyards and play spaces to urban plazas and corporate villas. Some of the projects discussed already occupy a canonical position in modern landscape architecture;others deserve a similar place but are less well known. The result is a record of landscapearchitecture's cultural contribution - as distinctly different in history, intent, and procedurefrom its sister fields of architecture and planning - during the years when it was acquiringprofessional status and struggling to define a modernist aesthetic out of the startling changes inpostwar America. € 45,30

![]() ![]() Author: Green Roger G., Muir Helen, James Melanie, Grandwell David Publisher: Gower Technical This book has two functions. The second function is to provide this knowledge in a way that follows very closely the syllabus of the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) Human Performance and Limitations examinations for both professional and private pilots. Although the private pilot’s syllabus requires a narrower range of subjects to be studied, and in less detail, than the professional syllabus, this handbook covers both requirements, with syllabus variations being indicated in the contents page. The book is divided into four major sections containing material from psychology, physiology and medicine. € 45,70

![]() ![]() Author: Wiggins Melanie Publisher: Texas A & M Univ Pr At the beginning of America's involvement in World War II, Galveston Island was a recreation center for area servicemen. Every evening throngs of soldiers, sailors, and Marines strolled along the seawall, basking in the warm sun and soft gulf breezes. Red, pink, and white oleanders bloomed in all their glory, sea gulls squawked overhead, and gentle waves swished over sandy beaches. It was paradise on earth. Small wonder that German U-boat commanders couldn't believe their eyes when they stealthily entered the Gulf of Mexico that year. All navigational lights glowed, and towns and cities along the coast shone brightly, illuminating every American ship traveling by. On Galveston Island the summer tourist season had just begun when Harro Schacht, commander of U-507, sailed up to the mouth of the Mississippi River and blew up eight ships. Catching Americans totally unprepared for a Gulf attack, twenty-four German submarines entered the Gulf of Mexico between 1942 and 1943 and attacked both American and Allied ships, sinking fifty-six merchant ships and damaging fourteen more. In May, 1942 alone, the blitz of the 'Gulf Sea Frontier' gave German U-boats their greatest victories to that date in the war. From then until peace in 1944, Allied shipping in the Gulf sailed freely, secure from attack--but not until this surprising onslaught raised national patriotism to new heights and brought the war so close to home. Based on interviews with U.S. Navy, Merchant Marine, and German U-boat veterans, translated war diaries, and declassified military documents, Torpedoes in the Gulf tells a fascinating personal story with two sides. Readers will marvel at behind-the-scenes accounts of German U-boat spy maneuvers and as Galvestonians, fearing for their lives, raced to fortify their island, convinced at last that they were truly at war. € 18,70
