![]() ![]() Author: Stern Nicholas (EDT), Bowen Alex (EDT), Whalley John (EDT) Publisher: World Scientific Pub Co Inc The year 2015 will be a landmark year for international climate change negotiations. Governments have agreed to adopt a universal legal agreement on climate change at the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris in 2015. The agreement will come into force no later than 2020.This book focuses on the prospects for global agreement, how to encourage compliance with any such agreement and perspectives of key players in the negotiations — the United States, India, China, and the EU. It finds that there is strong commitment to the established UN institutions and processes within which the search for further agreed actions will occur. There are already a myriad of local and regional policies that are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build mutual confidence. However, the chapters in the book also highlight potential areas of discord. For instance, varying interpretations of the “common but differentiated responsibilities” of developing countries, agreed as part of the UNFCCC, could be a major sticking point for negotiators. When combined with other issues, such as the choice of consumption or production as the basis for mitigation commitments, the appropriate time frame and base date for their measurement and whether level or intensity commitments are to be negotiated, the challenges that need to be overcome are considerable. The authors bring to bear insights from economics, public finance and game theory. € 102,30

![]() ![]() Author: B. Gibilisco Michael, M. Gowen Annie, E. Albert Karen, N. Mordeson John, J. Wierman Mark Publisher: Springer-Verlag New York Inc This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the social choice literature and shows, by applying fuzzy sets, how the use of fuzzy preferences, rather than that of strict ones, may affect the social choice theorems. To do this, the book explores the presupposition of rationality within the fuzzy framework and shows that the two conditions for rationality, completeness and transitivity, do exist with fuzzy preferences. Specifically, this book examines: the conditions under which a maximal set exists; the Arrow’s theorem; the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem and the median voter theorem. After showing that a non-empty maximal set does exists for fuzzy preference relations, this book goes on to demonstrating the existence of a fuzzy aggregation rule satisfying all five Arrowian conditions, including non-dictatorship. While the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem only considers individual fuzzy preferences, this work shows that both individuals and groups can choose alternatives to various degrees, resulting in a social choice that can be both strategy-proof and non-dictatorial. Moreover, the median voter theorem is shown to hold under strict fuzzy preferences but not under weak fuzzy preferences. By providing a standard model of fuzzy social choice and by drawing the necessary connections between the major theorems, this book fills an important gap in the current literature and encourages future empirical research in the field. € 135,50

![]() ![]() Author: Owens Stephen, Abraham Ken, Seigenthaler John (FRW) Publisher: B & H Pub Group “Gaile Owens is my mother. I am her son. Please do not take this from me. There is no justice in taking her life. There is no justice in denying the healing power of forgiveness.” Stephen Owens was 12 years old in 1985 when he discovered his father at home badly beaten and near death. Evidence proved Stephen’s mom, Gaile, had hired a hit man to carry out the murder, and she was sent to death row. Stephen and Gaile did not see each other for decades, but through an amazing series of life transformations and revelations about the tragic event, God opened a door for both of them to be set free -- one from a prison of unforgiveness, the other from a literal prison cell. While the events surrounding Gaile Owens’ release made national headlines and have stirred widespread fascination, Set Free far exceeds the experience and expectations of a modern true crime story, proving to be much more about God as the loving author of true forgiveness. € 12,60

![]() ![]() Author: Owens John Publisher: Sourcebooks Inc An explosive new look at the pressures on today's teachers and a call-to-action for real education reform When John Owens left a lucrative publishing job to teach English at a public school in New York City's South Bronx, he thought he could do some good. Instead, he found an educational maelstrom that robs students of real learning to improve the school's statistics at any cost, even demonizing its own support system: the teachers. Using first-hand accounts from teachers across the U.S., Confessions of a Bad Teacher is an eye-opening look at the dire state of American education and an essential blueprint for how to embrace our best educators and create positive change for our children's futures. € 12,50

They describe the increased pace of innovation in the twenty-first century. They describe the precepts behind responsible innovations, value-sense design, increased dialog and debate, and creative anticipation and describe understanding the ethical issues, adaptive governance, multilevel dynamics and soft intervention, implications in finance, and information and communication technology. ![]() ![]() Author: Bowen John R. Publisher: Taylor & Francis An anthropological examination of religious practices.
Religions in Practice offers a unique perspective on how people engage in everyday religious practices — such as prayer, sacrifice, initiation, and healing — by investigating broad-scale issues, such as transnationalism, gender, and religious laws.
No other text examines the full spectrum of religions, from small-scale societies to full-blown “world religious movements.” The in-depth treatment of Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity is of particular interest to students, and is easily expanded to include field projects directly related to material covered in the text.

![]() ![]() Author: Bowen John R. Publisher: Cambridge Univ Pr 'In this powerful but accessible new study John Bowen draws on a full range of work in social anthropology to present Islam in ways that emphasise its constitutive practices, from praying and learning to judging and political organising. Starting at the heart of Islam - revelation and learning in Arabic lands - Bowen shows how Muslims have adapted Islamic texts and traditions to ideas and conditions in the societies in which they live. Returning to key case studies in Indonesia, Africa, Pakistan and Western Europe to explore each major domain of Islamic religious and social life, Bowen also considers the theoretical advances in social anthropology that have come out of the study of Islam. A New Anthropology of Islam is essential reading for all those interested in the study of Islam and for those following new developments in the discipline of anthropology'-- € 90,00

![]() ![]() Author: Bowen H. V. (EDT), Mancke Elizabeth (EDT), Reid John G. (EDT) Publisher: Cambridge Univ Pr 'This pioneering comparative study of British imperialism in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds draws on the perspectives of British newcomers overseas and their native hosts, metropolitan officials and corporate enterprises, migrants and settlers. Leading scholars examine the divergences and commonalities in the legal and economic regimes that allowed Britain to project imperium across the globe. They explore the nature of sovereignty and law, governance and regulation, diplomacy, military relations and commerce, shedding new light on the processes of expansion that influenced the making of empire. While acknowledging the distinctions and divergences in imperial endeavours in Asia and the Americas - not least in terms of the size of indigenous populations, technical and cultural differences, and approaches to indigenous polities - this book argues that these differences must be seen in the context of what Britons overseas shared, including constitutional principles, claims of sovereignty, disciplinaryregimes and military attitudes'-- € 122,40

![]() ![]() Author: Bowen John R. Publisher: Mit Pr In the United States and in Europe, politicians, activists, and even some scholars argue that Islam is incompatible with Western values and that we put ourselves at risk if we believe that Muslim immigrants can integrate into our society. Norway's Anders Behring Breivik took this argument to its extreme and murderous conclusion in July 2011. Meanwhile in the United States, state legislatures' efforts to ban the practice of Islamic law, or sharia, are gathering steam--despite a notable lack of evidence that sharia poses any real threat. In Blaming Islam, John Bowen uncovers the myths about Islam and Muslim integration into Western society, with a focus on the histories, policy, and rhetoric associated with Muslim immigration in Europe, the British experiment with sharia law for Muslim domestic disputes, and the claims of European and American writers that Islam threatens the West. Most important, he shows how exaggerated fears about Muslims misread history, misunderstand multiculturalism's aims, and reveal the opportunism of right wing parties who draw populist support by blaming Islam. € 18,10

![]() ![]() Author: Owen John, Parks Tom (NRT) Publisher: Echristian Written by John Owen, one of the best known of the Puritans. In The Mortification of Sin, John Owen insisted on the importance of the Christian dealing effectively with their sinful tendencies and attitudes. He believed that God, through his Word and Spirit, had provided the guidelines and the power for this to be achieved. Owen effectively dismisses various excuses for not engaging in self scrutiny and yet avoids the current trend of self absorption. In so doing he provides principles to help believers live lives of holiness. As with all of Owen's writings, continues to be widely read and greatly appreciated to this day. € 14,80

![]() ![]() Author: Bowen John R. Publisher: Princeton Univ Pr Can Islam Be French? is an anthropological examination of how Muslims are responding to the conditions of life in France. Following up on his book Why the French Don't Like Headscarves, John Bowen turns his attention away from the perspectives of French non-Muslims to focus on those of the country's Muslims themselves. Bowen asks not the usual question--how well are Muslims integrating in France?--but, rather, how do French Muslims think about Islam? In particular, Bowen examines how French Muslims are fashioning new Islamic institutions and developing new ways of reasoning and teaching. He looks at some of the quite distinct ways in which mosques have connected with broader social and political forces, how Islamic educational entrepreneurs have fashioned niches for new forms of schooling, and how major Islamic public actors have set out a specifically French approach to religious norms. All of these efforts have provoked sharp responses in France and from overseas centers of Islamic scholarship, so Bowen also looks closely at debates over how--and how far--Muslims should adapt their religious traditions to these new social conditions. He argues that the particular ways in which Muslims have settled in France, and in which France governs religions, have created incentives for Muslims to develop new, pragmatic ways of thinking about religious issues in French society. € 23,40

![]() ![]() Author: Piper John, Carson D. A., Strachan Owen (EDT), Mathis David (EDT) Publisher: Crossway Books 'Dr. D.A. Carson beautifully blends his love for pastoral ministry and scholarship in a series of short arguments. Like Piper, he shares his journey and the 'providential twists' that have contributed to his life as a scholar. Most helpful are the lessons that Carson sets forth for the scholar as pastor. He encourages scholars to guard against an ivory tower mentality. As such, the encouragement includes immersion in the real world. Carson encourages scholars to steer clear from the deadly 'seduction of applause' which may come from publishing house and wide readership as well as a close circle of friends...the author encourages scholars to fight what he calls a 'common disjunction' between the 'objective study of Scripture and devotional reading.' Of course, he encourages scholars to critically engage with the text, but he also encourages meaningful times of devotion. Scholars must tremble before God's Word (Isa. 66:2)...[In] a fitting conclusion, David Mathis points readers to Jesus, the supreme example of a pastor-scholar: 'Jesus, the God-man, is the ultimate model of engaging both heart and head, not compromising either for the other.' This indeed is the aim of the editors, namely, for scholarship and pastoral ministry to point to Jesus and his gospel. The Pastor as Scholar and the Scholar as Pastor is a refreshing and liberating book, especially for any pastor who takes scholarship seriously. For pastors who have grown weary of scholarship and have pushed the hard work of exegesis to the margins of their ministry - this book will be a challenging, yet helpful antidote that will benefit not only the pastor, but the people he is called to shepherd' -- Amazon.com. € 11,10
