![]() ![]() Author: McCloskey Keith; Baccarini E. (cur.) € 16,00

![]() ![]() Author: Mccloskey Deirdre Nansen Publisher: Univ of Chicago Pr There’s little doubt that most humans today are better off than their forebears. Stunningly so, the economist and historian Deirdre McCloskey argues in the concluding volume of her trilogy celebrating the oft-derided virtues of the bourgeoisie. The poorest of humanity, McCloskey shows, will soon be joining the comparative riches of Japan and Sweden and Botswana. Why? Most economists—from Adam Smith and Karl Marx to Thomas Piketty—say the Great Enrichment since 1800 came from accumulated capital. McCloskey disagrees, fiercely. “Our riches,” she argues, “were made not by piling brick on brick, bank balance on bank balance, but by piling idea on idea.” Capital was necessary, but so was the presence of oxygen. It was ideas, not matter, that drove “trade-tested betterment.” Nor were institutions the drivers. The World Bank orthodoxy of “add institutions and stir” doesn’t work, and didn’t. McCloskey builds a powerful case for the initiating role of ideas—ideas for electric motors and free elections, of course, but more deeply the bizarre and liberal ideas of equal liberty and dignity for ordinary folk. Liberalism arose from theological and political revolutions in northwest Europe, yielding a unique respect for betterment and its practitioners, and upending ancient hierarchies. Commoners were encouraged to have a go, and the bourgeoisie took up the Bourgeois Deal, and we were all enriched. Few economists or historians write like McCloskey—her ability to invest the facts of economic history with the urgency of a novel, or of a leading case at law, is unmatched. She summarizes modern economics and modern economic history with verve and lucidity, yet sees through to the really big scientific conclusion. Not matter, but ideas. Big books don’t come any more ambitious, or captivating, thanBourgeois Equality. € 47,80

![]() ![]() Author: Mccloskey Keith Publisher: History Pr Ltd What really happened to the mysteriously vanished lighthouse keepers—a true story, evocative of The Shining On December 26, 1900, the vessel Hesperus arrived at Eilean Mor in the remote Outer Hebrides with relief lighthouse men and fresh provisions. Staffed by three keepers, the lighthouse had been in operation for a year, but no light had been seen from Eilean Mor for 10 days. Upon arrival, the superintendent, Robert Muirhead, found the lighthouse to be completely deserted, and a subsequent search of the surrounding island failed to show any sign of what happened to the keepers. The last entry in the lighthouse logbook had been made on December 15, and contained a number of strange and distressing entries that offered clues as to the mental state of the men. One was reported to have been crying, while another had become 'very quiet.' When it was revealed that the men's oilskin coats were missing and the clock in the lighthouse had stopped, inevitable theories surrounding the keepers' fates were soon put forward. These included a giant wave washing them away, murder and suicide by the men themselves, and more esoteric explanations, as Eilean Mor was believed to have mystical properties. This book explores this mysterious and chilling story in depth for the first time and reveals a shocking conclusion. € 16,10

![]() ![]() Author: McCloskey William B. Jr. Publisher: Skyhorse Pub Co Inc William McCloskey’s bestselling novel Highliners established him as an authority on the dangers and hardships of the Alaskan fishing industry. Now in an epic sequel, Breakers returns to Kodiak to chart the fortunes of McCloskey’s beloved characters as they make their living from the sea. A respected skipper, Hank Crawford runs his own boat and is well liked by his crew. Yet Hank knows all too well that with a hefty mortgage to pay off, a brand-new boat, and an even newer baby, he and his family need the crab and salmon to keep coming into their nets. But as every fisherman knows, the sea is a fickle mistress. The crab season is the poorest yet, and salmon prices drop. When his child falls ill and his boat gets damaged, Hank journeys in desperation to his partners in Japan. Here he faces a moral crossroads: compromise his own business ethics or risk losing everything he’s worked for. With the same thrill of danger, McCloskey captures the excitement, the drama, and the never-ending fears that are the landmarks of the commercial fisherman’s trade. Breakers is truly a triumphant addition to the saga Highliners sets in motion. € 15,20

![]() ![]() Author: McCloskey William B. Jr. Publisher: Skyhorse Pub Co Inc Twenty years after his greenhorn days in William McCloskey’s bestselling novel Highliners, Hank Crawford stands tall as a respected fishing captain in Kodiak, Alaska. Set amongst the tumult of the early 1980s, Raiders follows the struggles of the Alaskan fishermen as they regain control of their fishing grounds from the fleets of foreign companies, who have been plundering their bays. But such companies aren’t deterred, and instead contract American boats to catch the fish for them. In order to keep his family afloat—he swears—Hank signs on with a Japanese firm. Shunned as a traitor by his peers, Hank keeps on fishing. Their disgust and his tainted ethics will all be worth it for the chance to keep on fishing. But when Hank begins to suspect that his new employers are playing a political game—and playing him as the pawn—he must confront the possibility that in order to find redemption, he’ll have to sacrifice all he has. In this masterful finale to the Highliners series, McCloskey takes on the all-too-real horrors of the seafaring life: storms that can sink a ship, giant fish that can snap a man’s arm. For anyone in love with the Alaskan backdrop, the feel of hauling in fish, or traveling the ever-changing sea, Raiders is a story to read, cherish, and never forget. € 15,20

![]() ![]() Author: Mccloskey Keith Publisher: History Pr Ltd The Dyatlov Pass incident resulted in nine unsolved, mysterious deaths; Keith McCloskey attempts to decipher the bizzare events that led up to that night and the subsequent aftermath In January 1959, 10 experienced young skiers set out to travel to a mountain named Mount Otorten in the far north of Russia. Otorten translates to 'don't go there' in the local Mansi language. During the trip, one of the skiers fell ill and returned. The remaining nine lost their way and ended up on another mountain slope known as Kholat Syakhl, or 'Mountain of the Dead.' On the night of February 1, 1959, something or someone caused the skiers to flee their tent in terror, using knives to slash their way out instead of using the entrance. When they failed to return home, search parties were sent out and their bodies were found, some with massive internal injuries but all without external marks. The autopsy report showed that the injuries were caused by 'an unknown compelling force.' Subsequently, the area was sealed off for years by the authorities and the deaths and events of that night remained unexplained. Benefiting from original research carried out in Russia, this book attempts to explain what happened to the nine skiers who lost their lives in what has come to be known as the 'Dyatlov Pass Incident.' € 16,10
