Publisher: Texas A & M Univ Pr Written for ranchers, landowners, 4-H-ers, veterinarians, and anyone interested in wild or ornamental plants,Toxic Plants of Texas is a complete, practical guide to 106 of the most common poisonous plants in Texas. In a handy, well-illustrated format, experts Charles R. Hart, John C. Reagor, Bruce B. Carpenter, A. Catherine Barr, and Tam Garland provide descriptions of each plant, explaining where it grows, what makes it toxic, and how much an animal must eat to be affected. They also offer a primer on different kinds of poisoning, lists of symptoms, and strategies for treatment and prevention. An overview of integrated toxic plant management summarizes an economical and environmentally sound approach to reducing livestock losses by controlling toxic plants. At the back of the book, a field key cross-references animal symptoms with plant species. An abundance of excellent color photographs aid in the identification of each plant's toxic features, including the flowers, fruits, pods, and roots. € 22,30

![]() ![]() Author: Hart Paul J. B., Reynolds John D., Hart Paul J. B. (EDT) Publisher: Blackwell Pub Recent decades have witnessed strong declines in fish stocks around the globe, amid growing concerns about the impact of fisheries on marine and freshwater biodiversity. Fisheries biologists and managers are therefore increasingly asking about aspects of ecology, behaviour, evolution and biodiversity that were traditionally studied by people working in very separate fields. This has highlighted the need to work more closely together, in order to help ensure future success both in management and conservation. The Handbook of Fish Biology and Fisheries has been written by an international team of scientists and practitioners, to provide an overview of the biology of freshwater and marine fish species together with the science that supports fisheries management and conservation. This volume, subtitled Fisheries, focuses on a wide range of topics, including the history of fisheries science, methods of capture, marketing, economics, major models used in stock assessments and forecasting, ecosystem impacts, marine protected areas and conservation. It builds on material in Volume 1, Fish Biology, which ranges from phylogenetics and biogeography to physiology, recruitment, life histories, genetics, foraging, reproductive behaviour and community ecology. Together, these books present the state of the art in our understanding of fish biology and fisheries and will serve as valuable references for undergraduates and graduates looking for a comprehensive source on a wide variety of topics in fisheries science. They will also be useful to researchers who need up-to-date reviews of topics that impinge on their fields, and decision makers who need to appreciate the scientific background for management and conservation of aquatic ecosystems. ![]() ![]() Author: Harte John Publisher: Univ Science Books Following in the tradition of Consider a Spherical Cow, the Cylindrical Cow will help students achieve a whole new level of environmental modeling and problem solving. Featuring a new core set of 25 fully worked-out problems, this book uses real problems in environmental science rather than relying on the more traditional 'cookbook' problems found in textbooks. It is organized according to five thematic sections on probability, optimization, scaling, differential equations, and stability and feedback. Each section begins with a general treatment of the relevant mathematical concepts, and concludes with a range of homework exercises to help students sharpen their modeling skills. Like its predecessor, this book will empower students with the mathematical skills needed to cut through the complexity of real-world problems. € 54,60

![]() ![]() Author: Hart John W. Publisher: Peter Lang Pub Inc Karl Barth and Emil Brunner rose to theological prominence in the 1920s as leading spokesmen for the new 'dialectical theology' movement. Thus, many were surprised by Barth's vehement rejection of Brunner's theology only a decade later in their famous 1934 'natural theology' debate. For the past sixty-five years, there has been little investigation into the root causes of their parting of the ways. This book is a historical and theological analysis of the coming together and falling apart of the Barth-Brunner alliance in the years 1916-1936. Through a close study of their writings and their recently published correspondence, the radical and powerful nature of Barth's theology is demonstrated. € 59,50

![]() ![]() Author: Hartigan John Publisher: Princeton Univ Pr Racial Situations challenges perspectives on race that rely upon oft-repeated claims that race is culturally constructed and, hence, simply false and distorting. John Hartigan asserts, instead, that we need to explain how race is experienced by people as a daily reality. His starting point is the lives of white people in Detroit. As a distinct minority, whites in this city can rarely assume they are racially unmarked and normative--privileges generally associated with whiteness. Hartigan conveys their attempts to make sense of how race matters in their lives and in Detroit generally. Rather than compiling a generic sampling of white views, Hartigan develops an ethnographic account of whites in three distinct neighborhoods--an inner city, underclass area; an adjacent, debatably gentrifying community; and a working-class neighborhood bordering one of the city's wealthy suburbs. In tracking how racial tensions develop or become defused in each of these sites, Hartigan argues that whites do not articulate their racial identity strictly in relation to a symbolic figure of black Otherness. He demonstrates, instead, that intraracial class distinctions are critical in whites' determinations of when and how race matters. In each community, the author charts a series of names--'hillbilly,' 'gentrifier,' and 'racist'--which whites use to make distinctions among themselves. He shows how these terms function in everyday discourses that reflect the racial consciousness of the communities and establish boundaries of status and privilege among whites in these areas. € 61,60

![]() ![]() Author: Harthan John P. Publisher: Thames & Hudson Pomp and circumstance, epic fantasy, travel, romance, meditation, history, satire, erotic intrigue: books throughout history, from papyrus to paperback, have used images to reinforce words. Manuscripts and printed books have been illustrated in every Western artistic style, and the artists represented in this classic survey range from ancient Egypt to modern Manhattan, from the Master of the Leaping Figures to Henri Matisse. Among the byways of this vast artistic field are the fiery manuscript Apocalypses of the early Middle Ages, fable books and songbooks, and the ornate records of baroque court life. Perhaps the artistic peak of printed book illustration was reached with the delicate engraving technique used in the eighteenth century. After 1800, as book production became more industrialized, many illustrators continued to produce superb work for a wide readership, but others turned back to craft processes to recreate the medieval tradition of the book as a precious object. Both the mass market and the minority of bibliophiles have survived into the twentieth century; and on many fronts, from botany to fiction, from poems to physiology, illustration is still a vital and developing art. € 36,10

![]() ![]() Author: Winograd Terry (EDT), Bennett John (EDT), De Young Laura (EDT), Hartfield Bradley (EDT) Publisher: Prentice Hall The book contains essays contributed by prominent software and design professionals, interviews with experts, and profiles of successful projects and products. These elements are woven together to illuminate what design is, to identify the common core of practices in every design field, and to show how software builders can apply these practices to produce software that is more satisfying for users. The initial chapters view software from the user's perspective, featuring the insights of experienced software designers and developers, including Mitchell Kapor, David Liddle, John Rheinfrank, Peter Denning, and John Seely Brown. Subsequent chapters turn to the designer and the design process, with contributions from designers and design experts, including David Kelley, Donald Schon, and Donald Norman. Profiles discussing Mosaic, Quicken, Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines, Microsoft Bob, and other notable applications and projects highlight key points in the chapters. This book is for a broad community of people who conceive, develop, market, evaluate, and use software. It is foremost for software designers - particularly the reflective designer who is driven by practical concerns yet is able to step back for a moment and reflect on what works, what doesn't work, and why. At the same time, it reveals new directions and new possibilities for programmers who build software and for product managers who bring software to market. € 51,40
