Bir Umm Fawakhir 3 is the last of the final reports on the archaeological surveys and excavations at the Byzantine site of Bir Umm Fawakhir in the central Eastern Desert of Egypt; it remains the only intensively studied ancient Egyptian gold-mining operation, and one of very few completely mapped towns of the era. Along with other recent excavations and surveys, it demonstrates the Byzantine empire’s continuing activities in the Eastern Desert, not abandonment, as had long been believed. Four survey seasons, in 1992, 1993, 1996, and 1997, succeeded in dating the site to the fifth- and sixth-century Coptic/Byzantine period, mapping in detail the main settlement and one of the fourteen outlying settlements, and determining that it was a gold-mining operation. The goals of the 1999 excavations and the 2001 study season reported in this volume were to answer questions about the site and its occupants that surveys alone could not address, primarily the history of occupation of the site and the status of its occupants. The 1999 excavations of a sample of the houses and middens were undertaken to provide more information about the occupants and their well-being or lack thereof. Two houses, two middens, and one single-room outbuilding were excavated. Like the earlier Roman-period stone quarries in the desert, the miners seem to have worked intermittently and abandoned, or nearly so, the sitebetween mining campaigns. The pottery study extends the corpora published with previous seasons, and the chapter on small finds discusses the wine jar dockets (dipinti), coins, jewelry, emeralds, metal, glass, and other objects. Analysis of the faunal material during the 2001 study season supports the picture of a town well provided with meat, not only sheep and goats but also an unusual amount of beef. The volume is rounded out by an archaeobotanical study and the conservators’ reports, including the construction of a barricade at the entrance to the site to help preserve it. A final chapter summarizes what can now be said about life and work at ancient Bir Umm Fawakhir.

We propose an edited volume on the ecology of lianas comprised of chapters written by some of the foremost ecologists in the field. We have also identified a number of junior scientists who are beginning to make an impact on the field and could contribute new research and exciting results. Ultimately, we believe that this book will address issues of importance for all ecologists, temperate and tropical alike, and will be instrumental in stimulating further research in forest ecology in general, as well as on the ecology of lianas.

The main goal of this book is to present a volume on the current status of liana ecology in

tropical and temperate forests. In essence, we will use this book as a forum to summarize and synthesize the most recent research in liana ecology and to address how this research fits into the broader field of ecology. In the course of reviewing what is new and exciting, we will point out liana-related issues that deserve more attention from researchers.

The intended audience for this book includes advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers in forest ecology at the population, community, and ecosystem levels. Ideally, each chapter will include a brief introduction of the relevant concept or theory, a review of the current state of liana-related research on this theory, including the author’s own contributions. Although this book will focus on current research in liana ecology, many of the proposed chapters will also cover theories that are applicable to all ecological systems not just tropical ones and not just focusing on lianas. Consequently, we believe that this book will target a broad audience of ecologists.

Each chapter will follow a similar format. The first part of the chapter will include a concise

history and review of the concept or theory at hand. The rest of the chapter will be devoted to the presentation and interpretation of empirical data addressing that concept or theory. The author of each chapter will have the leeway to use new or unpublished data or to synthesize and summarize his/her data or data of other authors. Although we believe that the way to make this book the best is as outlined above, authors will, of course, write the manuscripts in a way that reflects their approach and style.

It is a truism in psychology that self and autobiographical memory are linked, yet we still know surprisingly little about the nature of this relation. Scholars from multiple disciplines, including cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, anthropology, and philosophy have begun theorizing and writing about the ways in which autobiographical memory is organized, the role that narratives play in the development of autobiographical memory, and the relations between autobiographical memory, narrative, and self concept. If narratives are a critical link between memory and self, then it becomes apparent that the roles of language and social interaction are paramount. These are the issues addressed in this volume.

Although individual authors offer their own unique perspectives in illuminating the nature of the link between self and memory, the contributors share a perspective that both memory and self are constructed through specific forms of social interactions and/or cultural frameworks that lead to the formation of an autobiographical narrative. Taken together, the chapters weave a coherent story about how each of us creates a life narrative embedded in social-cultural frameworks that define what is appropriate to remember, how to remember it, and what it means to be a self with an autobiographical past.

The question of how well children recall and can discuss emotional experiences is one with numerous theoretical and applied implications. Theoretically, the role of emotions generally and emotional distress specifically in children's emerging cognitive abilities has implications for understanding how children attend to and process information, how children react to emotional information, and how that information affects their development and functioning over time. Practically speaking, increasing numbers of children have been involved in legal settings as victims or witnesses to violence, highlighting the need to determine the extent to which children's eyewitness reports of traumatic experiences are accurate and complete. In clinical contexts, the ability to narrate emotional events is emerging as a significant predictor of psychological outcomes.
