Eldredge Niles, Horenstein Sidney Title : Concrete Jungle
Author: Eldredge Niles, Horenstein Sidney
Publisher: Univ of California Pr

If they are to survive, cities need healthy chunks of the world’s ecosystems to persist; yet cities, like parasites, grow and prosper by local destruction of these very ecosystems. In this absorbing and wide-ranging book, Eldredge and Horenstein use New York City as a microcosm to explore both the positive and the negative sides of the relationship between cities, the environment, and the future of global biodiversity. They illuminate the mass of contradictions that cities present in embodying the best and the worst of human existence. The authors demonstrate that, though cities have voracious appetites for resources such as food and water, they also represent the last hope for conserving healthy remnants of the world’s ecosystems and species. With their concentration of human beings, cities bring together centers of learning, research, government, finance, and media?institutions that increasingly play active roles in solving environmental problems.

Some of the topics covered in Concrete Jungle:

--The geological history of the New York region, including remnant glacial features visible today

--The early days of urbanization on Manhattan Island, focusing on the history of Central Park, Collect Pond, and Manhattan Square

--The history of early railway lines and the development of New York’s iconic subway system

--The problem of producing enough safe drinking water for an ever-expanding population

--Prominent civic institutions, including universities, museums, and zoos

Eldredge Niles, Zimmer Carl (INT) Title : Extinction and Evolution
Author: Eldredge Niles, Zimmer Carl (INT)
Publisher: Firefly Books Ltd

"This book is a splendidly illustrated and thoughtfully constructed account of one of the greatest ideas ever conceived by the human mind -- evolution. Eldredge has cleverly combined our knowledge of living organisms with instructive insights into the fossil record to convincingly argue that evolution is, indeed, the grand unifying idea of biology."
-- Donald C. Johanson, Founder of the Institute of Human Origins, and author of From Lucy to Language

Extinction and Evolution recounts the work and discoveries of Niles Eldredge, one of the world's most renowned paleontologists, whose research overturned Charles Darwin's theory of evolution as a slow and inevitable process, as published in On the Origin of Species in 1859. Darwin had concluded that evolutionary changes happened very slowly over millions of years. Eldredge's work, however, convinced him that Darwin was wrong and that major evolution of life forms does not happen to any significant degree until after a mass extinction event, thus disproving the traditional view of evolution.

Eldredge's groundbreaking work is now accepted as the definitive statement of how life as we know it evolved on Earth. This book chronicles how Eldredge made his discoveries and traces the history of life through the lenses of paleontology, geology, ecology, anthropology, biology, genetics, zoology, mammalogy, herpetology, entomology and botany. While rigorously accurate, the text is accessible, engaging and free of jargon.

Extinction and Evolution features 160 beautiful color plates that bridge the gap between science and art, and show more than 200 different fossil specimens, including photographs of some of the most significant fossil discoveries of recent years. This is a book with appeal to a broad general audience, including natural history readers and students.

Scott Eugenie C., Eldredge Niles (FRW), Jones John E. III (FRW) Title : Evolution Vs. Creationism
Author: Scott Eugenie C., Eldredge Niles (FRW), Jones John E. III (FRW)
Publisher: Univ of California Pr

More than eighty years after the Scopes trial, the debate over teaching evolution continues in spite of the emptiness of the creationist positions. This accessible resource, now completely revised and updated, provides an essential introduction to the ongoing dispute's many facets--the scientific evidence for evolution, the legal and educational basis for its teaching, and the various religious points of view--as well as a concise history of the evolution-creationism controversy. This second edition also contains a discussion of the legal history, updated to include the seminal case of Kitzmiller v. Dover as well as a new chapter on public opinion and media coverage.

Scott Eugenie C., Eldredge Niles (FRW), Jones John E. III (FRW) Title : Evolution Vs. Creationism
Author: Scott Eugenie C., Eldredge Niles (FRW), Jones John E. III (FRW)
Publisher: Greenwood Pub Group

Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education, provides a reference for high school students and up, examining the creationism and evolution controversy from historical, legal, educational, political, scientific, and religious perspectives. The first few chapters of the book, on science, evolution, creationism, and religion, are intended to provide the background information necessary to understand the controversy. The second section, on the history of the controversy, includes a new chapter on testing intelligent design and evidence against evolution, targeting recent court cases. The third section presents selections from the literature, on both sides of the controversy, with excerpts from the creationist literature as well as rebuttals. However, because many creationist authors refused permission for excerpts to be reprinted in this book, some of the creationist writings are summarized, and references to the original literature are provided, with many readily available on the Internet. In this second edition, new excerpts from creationist literature are included from court briefs and other legal documents that, being part of a court's record, are in the public domain. The final chapter, new to this edition, looks at media treatments of the controversy and at public opinion polls. While the author seeks to write for the high school level and up, the book's dense layout, with few b&w illustrations, will not have immediate appeal to young adult readers. The price of this second edition is the same as the first edition. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Eldredge Niles Title : Darwin. Alla scoperta dell'albero della vita
Author: Eldredge Niles
Publisher: Codice

Perché aspettò tanto tempo a rendere pubblici i suoi studi?

Eldredge Niles Title : Darwin
Author: Eldredge Niles
Publisher: W W Norton & Co Inc

Charles Darwin's ideas resonate deeply in Western culture today, and his theory still lies at the heart of modern scientific evolutionary research. As other nineteenth-century figures fade, Darwin's theory of evolution still provokes controversy, spilling over into curriculum battles at state and local school boards in the United States and around the world.

In exploring the everyday artifacts of Darwin's life, his notebooks, and early manuscripts, Niles Eldredge "a candid, no-punches-pulled interpreter of the core ideas of evolutionary biology" (Science News) provides a rare glimpse into the mind of this highly intuitive, creative scientist. The celebration of Charles Darwin's 200th birthday in 2009 begins in November 2005 with the opening of a major exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, curated by Eldredge, that will travel across the nation. More than a companion book to the exhibit, Darwin is a rich and inspiring reconstruction of Darwin's life through his writings and discoveries.

Eldredge Niles; Pievani T. (cur.) Title : Le trame dell'evoluzione
Author: Eldredge Niles; Pievani T. (cur.)
Publisher: Raffaello Cortina Editore

Margulis Lynn, Sagan Dorion, Eldredge Niles (FRW) Title : What Is Life
Author: Margulis Lynn, Sagan Dorion, Eldredge Niles (FRW)
Publisher: Univ of California Pr

Half a century ago, before the discovery of DNA, the Austrian physicist and philosopher Erwin Schrödinger inspired a generation of scientists by rephrasing the fascinating philosophical question: What is life? Using their expansive understanding of recent science to wonderful effect, acclaimed authors Lynn Margulis and Dorion Sagan revisit this timeless question in a fast-moving, wide-ranging narrative that combines rigorous science with philosophy, history, and poetry. The authors move deftly across a dazzling array of topics--from the dynamics of the bacterial realm, to the connection between sex and death, to theories of spirit and matter. They delve into the origins of life, offering the startling suggestion that life--not just human life--is free to act and has played an unexpectedly large part in its own evolution. Transcending the various formal concepts of life, this captivating book offers a unique overview of life's history, essences, and future.
Supplementing the text are stunning illustrations that range from the smallest known organism (Mycoplasma bacteria) to the largest (the biosphere itself). Creatures both strange and familiar enhance the pages of What Is Life? Their existence prompts readers to reconsider preconceptions not only about life but also about their own part in it.

Niles Eldredge Title : Miner's Canary
Author: Niles Eldredge
Publisher: BERTRAMS PRINT ON DEMAND

Like the bird whose death signaled dangerous conditions in a mine, the demise of animals that once flourished should give humans pause. How is our fate linked to the earth's creatures, and the cycle of flourishing and extinction? Which are the simple workings of nature's order, and which are omens of ecological disaster? Does human activity accelerate extinction? What really causes it? In an illuminating and elegantly written account of the widespread reduction of the world's wildlife, renowned paleontologist Niles Eldredge poses these questions and examines humankind's role in the larger life cycles of the earth, composing a provocative general theory of extinction.
