Nel 1980 Katherine Dunn assistette a un incontro di boxe in tv. Ne rimase incantata e decise di andare col marito a una kermesse dal vivo, curiosa di indagare da vicino «la natura della violenza». Nel giro di un anno cominciò a frequentare le palestre locali, veri santuari di uno sport intriso di sangue e sudore. Iniziò poi a tenere una rubrica sul «Willamette Week», celebre foglio della controcultura di Portland, che avrebbe ospitato molti dei suoi ritratti - qui raccolti per la prima volta in un unico volume -, in cui Dunn mescola storie di atleti illustri e di personaggi oscuri, pittoreschi: dilettanti, allenatori, cutmen, preti boxeur.
