![]() ![]() Author: Antcliffe Mark (EDT), Greene Vivien (EDT), Edwards Paul (CON), Robins Anna Gruetzner (CON), Hewison Robert (CON) Publisher: Harry N Abrams Inc Vorticism was a brief but pivotal avant-garde art movement that emerged in London on the eve of WWI and came to an end in 1919. Led by the dynamic and controversial British artist Wyndham Lewis and named by American poet and critic Ezra Pound, Vorticism swiftly forged its own identity, helped by Lewis's radical magazine Blast, which was widely influential in both London and New York. Artists who were associated with the movement included Jacob Epstein, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, David Bomberg, Edward Wadsworth, Frederick Etchells, and Dorothy Shakespear. This book provides a thorough examination of Vorticism, its origins, and its impact on both sides of the Atlantic. € 37,00

![]() ![]() Author: Edwards Mark Publisher: Ashgate Pub Co While it has often been recognised that the development of Christian orthodoxy was stimulated by the speculations of those who are now called heretics, it is still widely assumed that their contribution was merely catalytic, that they called forth the exposition of what the main church already believed but had not yet been required to formulate. This book maintains that scholars have underrated the constructive role of these "heretical" speculations in the evolution of dogma, showing that salient elements in the doctrines of the fall, the Trinity and the union of God and man in Christ derive from teachings that were initially rejected by the main church. Mark Edwards also reveals how authors who epitomised orthodoxy in their own day sometimes favoured teachings which were later considered heterodox, and that their doctrines underwent radical revision before they became a fixed element of orthodoxy. The first half of the volume discusses the role of Gnostic theologians in the formation of catholic thought; the second half will offer an unfashionable view of the controversies which gave rise to the councils of Nicaea, Ephesus and Chalcedon . Many of the theories advanced here have not been broached elsewhere, and no synthesis on this scale had been attempted by other scholars. While this book proposes a revision in the scholarly perception of early Christendom, it also demonstrates the essential unity of the tradition. € 55,60

![]() ![]() Author: Edwards Mark J. Publisher: Ivp Academic The resurrection changed everything. "But for the resurrection," writes Mark J. Edwards, "there would have been no reason to argue for a union of two natures in the person of Christ, let alone for a dyad or triad in the Godhead. All that he had said and done in the course of his earthly ministry would have sat well enough with the character of a prophet who excelled such predecessors as Isaiah and John the Baptist only in power and closeness to God."That is the story that unfolds as Edwards gathers together the most salient comments from the early church on the latter half of the second article of the Nicene Creed on God the Son as the crucified and risen Lord. The deliberations of ancient Christian writers on these matters are regarded now as the nucleus of Christology. The work of Christ is customarily considered, in Western Christendom at least, as the principal object of his coming. That Christ died for our sins was an axiom of all apostolic preaching. In these pages we see that the doctrines of the Trinity and the incarnation were not the second thoughts of Christendom after its encounter with Greek philosophy. Rather they were forced on the church by its refusal to adopt the polytheism of the Greeks as a means of reconciling the sovereignty of God with the exaltation of Christ as Lord.It is ultimately in the work of Christ that the essentials of his Person are revealed. The church's early teachers ultimately combine to denounce the critical maneuvers that would persuade us that the Scriptures do not mean what they plainly say. Here, as throughout the Creed, we see how the early church rooted all its claims in Scripture. € 44,60

![]() ![]() Author: Edwards Mark (TRN), Constantine, Edwards M. J. Publisher: Liverpool Univ Pr This volume makes available three works attributed to Constantine – two of which were certainly not written by him – which are important sources for historians of the papacy, Christianity and Constantine himself. The Oration to the Saints is an intellectual defense of Christianity, which puts the case for monotheism, extols the incarnation and voluntary abasement of the Son of God, and finally declares Constantine's personal adherence to the Savior. The legend of the discovery of the True Cross by the empress Helena, mother of Constantine, following her conversion to Christianity is presented in translations of two variant accounts. The third text, the Edict of Constantine, presents Constantine's supposed edict to Pope Silvester transferring lands to the papacy. An introduction considers the authorship, motivation and historical context for each of the works, and extensive annotation elucidates textual difficulties and allusions. € 37,20

![]() ![]() Author: Benner Allen Rogers (EDT), Edwards Mark W. (FRW) Publisher: Univ of Oklahoma Pr First published in 1903, Selections from Homer’s Iliad has become a classic Greek textbook. Allen Rogers Benner presents selections from twelve books of the Iliad both in Greek and English. Short summaries between books bridge the narrative and aid the student in gaining a comprehensive view of the Iliad as a work of literature and art. Invaluable resources include an extensive section of notes on the text, a short Homeric grammar, and a vocabulary and Greek index. In a new foreword, Mark W. Edwards argues for the utility of Benner’s text while offering a useful summary of current scholarship on the historical sources of the epic, Greek oral tradition, and Homeric style and diction. Benner’s Iliad will join Barbour’s Herodotus and Garrison’s Catullus as indispensable volumes in classical culture and literature available from the University of Oklahoma Press.

![]() ![]() Author: Edwards Mark (EDT), Goodman Martin (EDT), Price Simon (EDT), Rowland Christopher (EDT) Publisher: Clarendon Pr This book is the first to tackle the origins and purpose of literary religious apologetic in the first centuries of the Christian era by discussing, on their own terms, texts composed by pagan and Jewish authors as well as by Christians. Previous studies of apologetic have focused primarily on the Christian apologists of the second century. These, and other Christian authors, are also represented in this volume but, in addition, experts in the religious history of the pagan world, in Judaism, and late antique philosophy examine very different literary traditions to see to what extent techniques and motifs were shared across the religious divide. These studies, ranging in time from the New Testament to the early fourth century, and including novel contributions by specialists in ancient history, Jewish history, ancient philosophy, the New Testament, and patristics, will put the study of ancient religious apologetic on to a new footing and make the book of value to scholars in each of these various disciplines. € 231,00
