Antesignano del "gran tour", Montaigne, assetato di conoscenza, attraversa la Francia, la Svizzera, sfiora la Germania meridionale e l'Austria e, infine, giunge in Italia da Vipiteno. Toccherà le principali città del nord-est e poi, dopo Bologna e Firenze, arriverà alla sospirata Roma, della quale brama diventare, riuscendovi, cittadino onorario. Osservatore curioso e attentissimo, nulla si lascerà sfuggire. Così, ci consegnerà immagini indelebili dei personaggi incontrati casualmente e di quelli volutamente cercati, fino al papa Gregorio XIII. Ci descriverà, con maestria insuperata, le località di rilievo culturale e artistico (con buona pace di Stendhal), nonché gli ambienti, i paesaggi, le accoglienze, i caratteri delle popolazioni e perfino i riti, i cibi, le feste, le costumanze, le bellezze delle donne e dei luoghi, senza trascurare - ove li ha incontrati - gli inevitabili disagi. E, costretto dalla personale, ereditata insufficienza renale, si dilungherà nella descrizione delle tante località termali e, con perizia specialistica, della patologia e delle terapie sperimentate. Il lungo viaggio, durato 17 mesi a cavallo del 1580-81, si distinguerà comunque come uno spaccato, una nitida fotografia dell'Italia qual era sotto l'ennesima dominazione straniera e dello Stato Pontificio.

In questo saggio, che Montaigne ha aggiunto agli altri "Essais" solo pochi anni prima della sua repentina scomparsa, nel 1592, il filosofo saggia l'inanità dei grandi racconti filosofici su Dio, il mondo, l'uomo, la politica - racconti che non solo non hanno evitato le guerre fratricide e insensate, ma spesso le hanno addirittura provocate - e si rivolge a ciò che davvero siamo in grado di sperimentare: l'io, il "moi".

Con il tono di chi stia conversando con un amico intimo, Montaigne organizza il suo ragionamento aiutandosi con mille esempi presi dalla vita contemporanea e dal mondo degli antichi. Affrontando infatti un tema così serio come il monito biblico che ogni cosa umana è vana e destinata a scomparire, egli rovescia le opinioni più diffuse trasformando la vanità in uno dei pregi principali della vita umana. Riconoscere la vanità di tutte le cose significa accettarne la loro natura provvisoria, non definitiva, non assoluta, così come anche l'"io", la propria soggettività, in quanto transitoria, è soggetta al mutamento. Montaigne tratteggia il primo ritratto dell'uomo moderno, quello che non si affida più alle certezze: «Di vanità e stupidaggini siamo tutti impregnati, ma quelli che se ne accorgono ne sono un po' più esenti, ma non ne sono certo».

Un'antologia di testi tratti dal capolavoro di Montaigne, "I Saggi". Un volume arguto, quasi da comodino, che ha il pregio di avvicinare i lettori al pensiero del grande filosofo francese.

Living at a time of religious strife and the decline of the intellectual optimism that had begun in the Renaissance, Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) expressed in his writings both a deep skepticism about human affairs and a wide-ranging intellectual curiosity reflective of the age. Having witnessed firsthand the bloody armed conflicts, fanaticism, and persecutions that arose out of religious differences between French Catholics and Protestant Huguenots, Montaigne was especially skeptical about human claims to knowledge. For this reason he published, not systematic philosophy, but mere attempts at knowledge, essays in understanding, or essais, as he called them in French. He thus inaugurated a new literary genre that proved to be very influential.
Despite his skepticism Montaigne realized that the intellectual horizon of his day was full of exciting new developments. The New World had only recently been discovered and explorers to many parts of the hitherto undiscovered world were bringing back reports of strange lands, people, and customs. At the same time the intellectual discoveries of the Renaissance had uncovered the powerful works of ancient Greek and Latin authors, and science, still in its infancy, was beginning to ask important new questions.
The essays reflect all these interests, plus a refreshing honesty about the frailties of human nature. Montaigne writes about vanity, the value of friendship, constancy, idleness, liars, virtue, cowardice, prognostication, cannibals, the greatness of Rome, "That to Study Philosophy Is to Learn to Die," and a host of other topics.

Il diario che quasi quotidianamente Michel de Montaigne scrisse dal 5 settembre 1580 al 30 novembre 1581 nel corso del lungo viaggio che lo portò da Beaumont-sur-Oise ad attraversare l'Italia fino a Roma, che raggiunse il 3 novembre 1580, per tornare infine nella sua tenuta di Montaigne, nelle vicinanze di Bordeaux. Quello dell'autore degli Essais può essere considerato come il primo grande viaggio compiuto da un intellettuale a scopo formativo, e da questo diario derivano infatti tutti quelli che autori come Goethe, Heine, Mommsen, De Sade, Montesquieu, Stendhal scriveranno sulle loro esperienze in Italia.

Blending intellectual speculation with anecdote and personal reflection, the Renaissance thinker and writer Michel de Montaigne pioneered the modern essay form. He was brought up to speak Latin as his mother tongue and always retained a Latin turn of mind; though he knew Greek, he preferred to use translations. In 1569 he published his French version of the Natural Theology of Raymond Sebond; his Apology is only partly a defence of Sebond and sets sceptical limits to human reasoning about God, man and nature. He retired in 1571 to his lands at Montaigne, devoting himself to reading and reflection and composing his Essays (first version 1580). He loathed the fanaticism and cruelties of the religious wars of the period , but sided with Catholic orthodoxy and legitimate monarchy.
