They present their discussion in six chapters, each of which focuses on a key process driving change in land relations: the regularization of access to land through state-backed programs of land titling, formalization, and settlement; the spatial expansion and intensification of efforts to conserve forests by restricting agriculture; the arrival of new "boom corps" that see the conversion of land to monocropped production; the conversion of land to post-agrarian uses; processes of agrarian class formation on the village scale; and the mobilization of collectivities to defend or assert access to land at the expense of other land users and other land uses.
