Gullah Culture in America

Gullah communities survive only on the coast and coastal islands of South Carolina and Georgia. It is a blend of African and English language and culture created by slaves brought to America from West Africa. Cross, a journalist who lives in Gullah country writes with affection and passion about the history and current lives of this tiny remnant that survived partly because so many Africans came form the same region and partly because the land they settled in was remote and, until recently, undesirable. Some chapters focus on the Gullah language, customs, religious expression and food. Other chronicle the history of the communities. The high point for the author is a trip made to Sierra Leone with several Gullah people where they were greeted as long lost cousins. This is for a general audience and gives a loving look at a little-know culture that is being threatened by economic demands and outside developers.
