This is a paperbound reprint of a 2005 book. MacIntyre (philosophy, U. of Notre Dame, Indiana) discusses Stein's (1891-1942) beginnings as a philosopher and her life during that same decade. He attributes the neglect of her work in English-language scholarship to views that is in one particular kind of response to German philosophy during the first four decades of the 20th century; and it does not help that she has been canonized.
