Basic knowledge of infectious and parasitic diseases is assumed. Many chapters were adapted from Blackwell's Five-Minute Veterinary Consult: Canine and Feline and Blackwell's Five-Minute Veterinary Consult Clinical Companion: Small Animal Dermatology, Second Edition. Most of the parasitology chapters are new. This edition incorporates new chapters on canine influenza, sarcoptic mange, and staphylococcal pyoderma. Diseases like West Nile virus are excluded.
