They discuss definitions of adoption and related terms, child circulation practices in other cultures, the US constructions of what constitutes family and how the value of and roles of children have changed historically, and US adoption practices in terms of the influence of socioeconomic status, marital status, and sexuality. Noting that adoption is usually a movement of children from lower to higher-status families, they examine the influence of the characteristics of children, governmental policies, and race, ethnicity, and racism in adoption and fosterage systems in the US, ending with a chapter on transnational adoption.
