Drawing on their own research on freedom of information (FOI) laws and access strategies, the authors walk readers step by step through the process of accessing government information and public records, with an emphasis on understanding the bureaucratic mindset. The book covers the entire process, from finding and requesting records through the final steps of writing and publishing a document-based story, newscast, or webcast. With chapter activities and exercises for the newsroom, the classroom, and for individuals, the book can be used in courses on media writing, investigative reporting, and media law. It will also be useful for activists, bloggers, and private investigators. Cuillier, chairman of the Society of Professional Journalists' Freedom of Information Committee, teaches journalism at the University of Arizona.
