At the Bottom of Shakespeare's Ocean
Book (italiano):
Mentz (English, St. John's University) offers a pocket (5x7.75") poetic history of the ocean. Seven plays are discussed: The Tempest, King Lear, Othello, The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night, Pericles, and Timon of Athens. Each of the book's chapters explores a different way that human bodies interact with the ocean: fathoming, keeping watch, swimming, beachcombing, fishing, and drowning. Reading the plays from a maritime perspective connects Shakespeare to our literary culture's ongoing efforts to come to grips with the sea. A bibliographic essay is included.
